Indigenous Flag Wammed
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/abo ... 55m6x.html
The indigenous flag will not be seen in the indigenous round.
Seems it is not an indigenous flag after all but a WAM flag.

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

Why not use the german civil flag instead.
It has been around a lot longer.

Pity. The flag should belong to all indigenous peoples not to some company out for profit.

Blame Harold Thomas the creator. He's the one who sold it to them.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
Yes it should, totally agree with the sentiment.
But if it was sold by Harold Thomas or some legal agreement was reached between Thomas and the WAM organization as the article alludes WAM have every right to receive compensation for the usage.
Probably a very naive thought but perhaps the government could purchase the rights from WAM and free the usage for all indigenous people and sporting organisations to use in a not for profit sense.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
Labor's Paul Keating had the aboriginal proclaimed an official Australian Flag on 14 July 1995.
The Labor government demonstrated their usual incompetence by failing to obtain the copyright to the flag.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
How can the government copyright something it doesn't own?
Why does everything have to be some stupid, grug brain partisan issue for so many people?
This has nothing to do with the Labour party and everything to do with the rightful owner selling the rights to his creation as is his legal right.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
The government could have bought the copyright just as WAM has done, only done it 25 years early before they proclaimed it a national flag.
We now have a national flag that does not belong to the nation.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
Mr. Thomas got better offers from the private industry and accepted them. Again I have no idea what this has to do with partisan politics.ace wrote: ↑Mon 17 Aug 2020 8:46pmThe government could have bought the copyright just as WAM has done, only done it 25 years early before they proclaimed it a national flag.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
Or maybe these WAM blokes could do the right thing and hand it over to the people, they’ve milked it for 50 years, I’m sure that’s long enough.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
'Milked it'? They bought the rights from the creator -- likely for a hefty fee -- and they're exercising their ownership.
What on Earth are you babbling about?
They're also not the only person he's sold the image to.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
Sorry, thought it said they obtained the copyright in 1971, my bad.
It does seem odd the government didn’t purchase the copyright when it became available.

Re: Indigenous Flag Wammed
Been an issue of discussion for many years. The owner has always sought to profit from it. Easy fix - design a new one. Should've done it a long time ago. Many blackfellas were arguing for this when news of the sale came out and they discovered they were suddenly restricted from using it.
