2 mistakes lead to 2 goals in the last quarter

Could put it down to rust but he did an ok job

Howard needs help to contain those monster forwards

Short term he will have to do but we need a permanent replacement - we need to proper young full back

Looks cooked. Maybe with some match fitness he'll look a bit better, but surely he doesn't get a gig unless there's a power forward that we don't trust Howard on.

Should not play against Dogs as no match up

I thought he made us miss Joyce. I'm not sure what that means except his performance was below average. Needed more time getting match fitness and awareness. The performance by the "big three" against Richmond appears to have forced Ratten's hand.

We kick straight and Frawley game would be talked about in glowing terms contained Hawkins and or Cameron as he and Howard rotated on them them. The backs did their job.

Win or Lose, the team as a whole needs to be analysed, along with individual performances. Our forwards are in for some heat but that does not excuse other players, selection or our medical team.

The loss of Marshall was a huge turning point.

I thought he was OK. He is definitely a better bet than Jake.

Our half back line could best be described as "make shift". We rely on Jack Sinclair for run, but he can't take an overhead mark. Jimmy Webster wouldn't get a game in any other team. Josh Battle has not improved on the promising signs last year - in both the marking and kicking departments which have gone backwards. Hunter Clark has skill but makes too many mistakes to be an A grader. Many of our turnovers come from him. However, there are no ready made replacements. James Frawley, Dougal Howard and Callum Wilkie are all solid marks but are not flexible enough to play at half back, that is, they have trouble turning and eluding tackles.

Webster was very good last night.

Yep, costly ones too. Maybe a one game wonder in Saints colours.

First game in for a while thought he was ok
Yep made goal errors late but was good most of the night
Only plays where match up necessitate is he fast enough to go with Bruce? He has no other match up otherwise

First game back, what do people expect?

Credit where it is due. He was good. Our defence worked well.
He is what we need for games like last night.
Certainly can't play each week. We always struggle against monster forwards. Our defence held up last night.

Therefore if a team has 3 big forwards he is a worthwhile inclusion.

The coach damned him with faint praise. He seems to have disappointed, either personally or the decision to replace Joyce was regretted.

But whatever, Mr Frawley will be another player that has to be managed, held together with glue and brown paper. We are just not consolidating a consistent, physically reliable group on the park and as we well know the key is slick teamwork.

Ratts was also bemoaning the level of injuries last night. He seems to be at a serious point of frustration as he strongly suspects our chance of finals just slipped though our fingers and again fate conspired against us - as well as our profligate forwards and lack of squad depth. Serious strategic discussion in the Footy Department this week - e.g. where to now and what furniture do we save.

I reckon holding Hawkins to 2 goals 0 was a pretty good result.

Probably did a reasonable job in a good team effort, but I would have liked Joyce there last night. We were lucky with Paddy, but relying on players in their 30s who are near the end of their careers, is a dodgy strategy.

100% agree. Hawkins has been in great form and was almost a non-factor last night minus the fact that he made the most of his very limited opportunities

Don’t know what else ppl could have expected from him

Thought the defence in general looked very good last night... all of them played well and there were no passengers.

Are ppl suggesting a like for like swap, Joyce in for Frawley to play on Hawkins?

Am just struggling to see where he would have fit

Should not be allowed to kick the ball. Need Hill or someone else to receive a handball at all times.

Never underestimate leadershIp and a level head in defence. Onfield coaches are worth more than in the box coaches. Our backline looked the best it has for ages and no coincidence he was part of it. We won’t challenge for top four until we have more leaders across all positions. (28-30yr olds)
