Post: # 1913197Post Vortex »

How did everyone see his game.

Another silver lining for 2021, credit to Ratts for moving him forward. I like the way Ratts has used the adversity of our 2021 season to try different things. Some have worked, some haven't. Hill has, Battle hasn't.

But Longy to the forward half looks like it might work.

Agreed although, a bit like Liam Jones going to the back line … it was a bit of a last chance coral type situation. I love Longy a lot - he’s one of our few players that’s got some genuine C u Next Tuesday about him and loves to hit hard. But he was liability behind the ball - his aggression easily tipped over into frees for the oppo near goals

But as a pressure forward he’s immense, excellent tackler and as Saynta noted - has defenders looking over their shoulder. Good mark over his head and a decent kick for goal

My hope is that he stays in that position and Lonie is offered a 5 year contract at Sandy as a result

Yeah his body type is seriously made for AFL.

I hope the penny has dropped for him and he keeps it up.

I love watching guys turn it around.

He’s a dangerous forward in both senses in that he can kick goals and also be a human wrecking ball.

I loved the showtime speccie. Went a little early, but willed himself to stay up there and defy gravity.

Has always had that "X" factor but too often also that "Y" factor. Second half much better than his first half. Dan Hannebery, if fit, and who can also take a contested mark over head, would challenge for his spot. No-one can ever accuse Ben of lacking endeavour.

Love the way he plays hard at the ball and also the man making them look over their should causing them to fumble or kik under pressure.
Will not be to long (pardon the pun)before he starts hitting the scoreboard with a couple of nice sausage rolls.
Definately has a spot in our team

Was just about to start a thread on this.

Watching the replay today, and he was in everything in the forward half.

Set up a few goals with slick gathers and handballs.
Very unselfish and great pressure.

Would have him in my votes on second viewing.

It’s funny…

He started his career in a FP with us and I remember thinking that he wasn’t that effective initially but really took his game up a level when he went to a HBF.

To me, he really lifted a gear and proved himself as a top 22 player there but regardless… ha always been rather polarising on this forum over the last two years

Going back forward with his new found confidence however appears to have been an absolute master stroke. He’s a very good example of what a FP should contribute even if they don’t kick goals

Has definite X factor which we need, needs to play, and I’d rate him as our number 1 or 2 small forward at the moment.

Should have always been a forward
I have screamed about this week 3
But relieved someone put him back in the forward line

Agressive and tough and dangerous
Makes oppo nervous

Such a better choice than Lonie

I know he has aggression and pressure and he gets the ball but to be there for the longer term, he’ll need to improve his kicking.

- quarter time last night his record for gettable set shots this year was one goal and eight behinds. Membrey, is afflicted too, but 20.22 is better than 1.8.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Wrong shane. His total score for the year before this game was 1-6. It now sits at 2-7. He’s had a lack of confidence this year, and credit to him for turning it around. His career tally is still pretty good at 23-23. https://www.afl.com.au/stats/stats-pro# ... 7/Long-Ben

Anyhow, nice of you to try and point out some negatives. Q: Want to know what he kicked last year when he was mainly in the backline?

A: 14-9.

He brings aggression and competitiveness; speed at the contest and speed in decision making. Some of his lightning handballs led to some lovely goals

Now that’s what I call looking at the positives

He was excellent last night, absolutely one of our best... compare him to Lonie in his games and it shows how valuable and impactful In his position he was last night

Re Longy: all of the above positives.

He is built and made for finals football. Lonie is not.

Could last night have ben his breakout game? the one he's been working his butt off to click and make happen
after missing a (couple of?) shots or gettable goals, not just last night but in recent weeks, him nailing that one just gave him that extra confidence
evident in the speccy he pulled off not long after - thats the Ben Long we've been waiting for

I think we would all love for him to start backing up with consistent games moving forward, using last night as the benchmark

He’s been in crap form (lost confidence and in and out of the squad) and kicked 2-7 this year, but….

Lets put his total tally into perspective and compare that 50 % with how Tom Papley went last year

Maybe also compare that 50% with how Eddie Betts went last year. Both had 50-50 conversion numbers.

Eddie played 15 games for 13-13. https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players ... Betts.html

He has the tools to go on and play over 100 games…and hopefully a few good finals

Let’s hope we look after Ben and support him so that he does that with the Saints

Anyhow …Thanks for the post

……… by the way…. Who would you prefer? This bloke; https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players ... Lonie.html

ok but lets call it for what it is - youre being positive about your preferred player and being negative about the one you dont like
Personally Im happy with Longs output atm, but he is (and may always be) a ticking tribunal hearing away
Cuz lets face it he must be the unluckiest footballer to ever have played with the number of hip/head collisions in a career
