Who would you trade?

Post: # 1918199Post Banger9798 »

Doubtful we keep them both so out of Billings and Ross who would you let go of?

IMO we are due for a shake down of the list and release some salary cap pressure:

Trade:
Dunstan
Billings or Ross
Lonie

Delist:
Hunter
McKernan
Frawley
Carlisle
Alabakis
Geary
Roberton
Hannaberry (if at all possible)

That's delisting a lot of tall players, albeit, they aren't much chop.

Is it possible to replace all those talls in one off season and end with up with better players ?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I reckon Hunter stays Alabakis goes.

Long and Kent expendable. Several others could go as well as listings above & there wouldn't be a ripple wins wise. Easier to list keepers.

Long stays IMHO,
he is worth persisting with.
Better forward pressure and value than Kent, Lonie.
He could work on stuff over preseason and come oit next year more consistent.

Billings would be more value than Ross, a bit younger and more upside.
Ross has proved time after time that he picks and chooses when he puts in an effort, and too often he's stuck on his heels watching someone run off him- I think it was Sam Walsh and Tim Kelly several times.
He's the new Newnes

Ross, JB and Dunny are replaceable.

Hill is generally a good distributor. Hunter Clarke can kick both feet as can the young gun Leo. Ronnie will be better next year

Battle and Long and Higgins and Butler can play up the ground. Crouch and Bytel fill the Dunny void.
Ben Paton should be ready to go and hopefully won't take more than a few games to find form

Jordan Dawson and Luke Parker ooc at the Swans

Only way to bring in talent like that is to free up space.

Dunstan is gone I recon but we'll see.

Billing should be cut if we have found a gettable upgrade.

Ross is untradable.

Carlsile should be retained if the club is confident he can get get his body right but cut him if they find a gettable upgrade.

Lonie gone if he finds another club and he just might get to the Dogs this year.

Paddy could retire

Long could request a trade to Essednon.

You trade what you have an excess of.

Billings is a good kick. We have very few of them. Keep him.

Dunstan & Ross are inside mids. We have plenty of them. Ross is miles ahead of Dunstan, therefore more valuable to both trade and keep.

We have an excess of half backs. Hill, Clark, Coffield, Sinclair, Webster, Paton, McKenzie, Highmore, Geary, Connolly. All reasonable players, but only a handful indispensable.

We have an excess of small forwards. Higgins, Lonie, Butler, Kent, Long. At least two could be moved on, although there's minimal trade value there.

Controversial however it doesn't surprise me if he is. Beggers can't be choosers unfortunately and I think this trade period is going to be the leanest for available talent that we have seen in a while.

Realistically what can we trade if any value that is upgradable…

The answer is

Dunstan
Billings
Ross
Battle
Long

Possibly McKenzie & Lonie too but that’s very much on the lowest end scale if they have any value at all

Not suggesting any/all go but that’s about all the expendable value we have.

A hot take might be Gresham - disposal questionable, two years out with injury, has he lost a step? I’d keep him though.

The age profile of the list, they’ve gotten very wrong. Way too many older players that can’t/don’t add anything. Alternatively, you can’t lose them all at once

That group includes McKernan, Hunter, Frawley, Roberton (if he still counts), Carlisle, Hannebery and Geary

In the off-season, if you can just make a dent on turning that list then by all means keep the one or two that add the most value

If Hannebery went into a coaches role like had been mooted, and a 1/2 year off meant Carlisle and Geary could hit the preseason running… keep those two and cut the rest = good outcome

Billings, Ross and Dunstan are all free agents. Won't get anything in a trade

Geary probably should retire- great though he has been as a captain and clubman, his time has passed. Carlise will add no further value going forward. Not sure about trading though, but quite a few of the playing list will not take us up near the top of the ladder.

I always forget about that.

Don’t you occasionally here the story about player X the free agent whose leaving some other club and insists that new club make sure old club is fairly compensated
Don’t know why that doesn’t happen for us

Dunstan I think will leave as comments smell of not happy
Billings i think stays unless an offer big enough for free agency 1st rounder is made. Has played a lot of this year injured.
Ross a key off field member and provides leadership which we lack so important in more than just on field. Bytel takes Dunstan's role.

Long if anyone will take him, Hard at it but has had many years and many roles but just NQR - a 26-30 player so you keep if $ right r offer poor

Kent, Lonie, thanks for service
Geary - honest discussion not in best at start of year, are you willing to play for less money, develop at sandy and if you work back to best 22 so be it?

Mckernan more likely than hunter on min,
Carlisle would like to keep but i think he is broken
rest listed agree with OP

Win/Win trade options ( mean we give up something we prefer to keep for something we need ) - Battle, McKenzie, Webster

Also about cap space, we will need to package something worthwhile for GC if we are to swing Ben King.

I would probably keep Billings slightly ahead of Ross but I reckon his elite ball use is more myth than reality.

If the plantar fascitis has been a legitimate reason for his underperforming, I'd prefer to keep JB.
But if it came to a trade for Bing, I'd package him up and wish him all the best up there in a heart beat.

Slight thread drift, would you have a look at Sam Weiderman from Melbourne, reports suggest North will have a nibble and so does that mean he is gettable.

Should we be freeing up salary to chase proven AFL capable talls? I know we need another tall for the backline but I can't think of a tall backline player that is gettable and suits our age profile.

Billings we can cover so wont be sorry to see him go.
Keep Ross can play a tagging role.
I think Dunstan is gone.

Was Ross tagging Walsh last week? I heard one commentator saying Ross was caught watching when Walsh got a goal, but that went on all game. We are slow across the ground with Ross and Dunstan in the same team, and have no penetration in kicking. It could be that Dunstan moves on, and that then creates a spot for Bytel. Ross has done a workmanlike job for years, but we need more flair with the ball, so choices must be made.

No trade value in our list. Entire team is either untouchable, free agents, or worthless. Maybe another club would see some value in Battle.

Delist 8+ players and go to draft. Invest heavily in player development, more than gameday.

First 3 picks from youth pool (best available), remainder targeted at list gaps - mature aged late bloomers from state leagues (e.g. Wilkie, Highmore, Parker, Heath).

It reminds me of a video I saw recently, regarding business:

Hire quickly, fire quickly, promote quickly. The analogy is that businesses put in so much effort in selecting new employees, that they hang onto the useless ones because it's such a hurdle to re-hire. If they aren't going to cut it, make room for someone who will.

I would trade ross as much as I like him its more about his age and lack of goal kicking
At least Billings will kick goals and when he is over his injury should be a lot better.
I would try and keep Dunstan and Defiantly keep Hunter as we don't have a lot of ruckman and he has done well considering he has only played a hand full of games.
We might have to even give up someone like a McKenzie if we are to get more draft picks.

Battle is one.

Pick one or two of Long, Webster, McKenzie, Coffield (if he wants opportunity).

Should get us a 2nd, maybe two and a couple of 3rd rounders.

Let's face it, Lonie, Kent, McKernan, Frawley have no value...anywhere.

Battle, Long & Webster would be my offerings to generate a trade or draft pick.

Ross, Dunstan, Billings value will be determined by contract offers, our hands are tied unless we pay over their value.

Trading out players for mid range draft picks

How does that make you better?

Ie/ We offload Dunstan and get somewhere between pick 20-40

Dunstan has 2 BOGs this year and been in the best 6 times

What’s the odds of a draftee ( eg Matthew Allison) will have nearly the same impact?!
