2 goals against in the first minute

Post: # 1947764Post D.B.Cooper »

Twice!

WTF?

Then we smash them.

Is this a good omen?
Is it coincidence?
How has this happened?
Weird?

I was worried when it happened against Richmond and said to my son on Sunday this means we will smash them based on last week.

Quick goals at the start of the match are often just luck or unlucky depending on which side of the ledger you are .
If you're on the receiving end you just hope it doesn't set the tone for the day . Thankfully 2 matches in a row we've been OK !

It will be a bit weird if it does happen again on Saturday.
Amazingly on Sunday they scored 2 in the first minute, 2 in the last minute and a half. And we scored 22 goals to 6 in the other 118 minutes.

Two Hawk goals (both frees) in the first minute and two goals to Hawks (one from free) in last minute.

Only six goals to 22 in the time in between.

Incidentally I just watched the 15 minute mini package of the game on foxtel where they usually show all or most of the goals .

They showed ALL of the Hawks 10 goals and MISSED showing NINE of the Saints goals. Editing obviously done by a Hawks supporter,

To anyone watching without seeing the scoreboard it was a close game .

Couldn't fit all our 22 into a 15 minutes highlight package :D

I'm pretty sure there wasn't any Hawthorn supporters confused by the mini.

Granted but they could have shown more Saints goals if they left out some Hawks goals.
Instead, to cut the time back to 15 minutes, all the goals left out were StKilda goals....NINE of them and some excellent ones at that.
It did show how HALF the Hawthorn goals were from frees including some highly questionable ones!

Fremantle also kicked the first 3 goals against us.

In each of our three wins we given our opposition 15, 12 and 12 point head starts in the opening quarter.

Didn’t Collingwood also kick a goal in the first minute of play?

A 16 to 7 spilt would have been fairer and would have been a true reflection of the result but fairness and truth have nothing to do with it.

It's a midfield defence setup issue, and I'm surprised it happens every game and then fixed after a couple of opposition goals. Get it right at the first bounce coach!

Very odd, would be nice to stop giving the opposition a head start!

No. Mason Wood kicked the first of the night at the 3m 38s mark.

We are currently missing Jones and Hannebery, and you can probbaly add Clark to that list now.

Jones in particular is important in this regard.
I think when we see Clark, and Jones back in the side, probably Billings too, this trend will end. But I have noticed that this quick goal out of the centre at the beginning of the first quarter is starting to become a habit. Given the Suns midfield arguably have us covered defensive set ups will be very important if we are to win this must win game.

Interestingly being two goals down within a minute or so seemed to spark us into action both times.

It sent the message that we needed to hit the scoreboard quickly and heavily … and we responded with six-goal quarters each week.

The ladder so far suggests we can score heavier than anyone else. That has to be a positive sign.

There is probably some truth to the saying that defence wins premierships, but I think scoreboard pressure is underrated.

If you can answer every opposition goal with two, they don’t stand a chance.

Seems to spark us. Not too worried unless it becomes an insurmountable lead.

We seriously don't want to do this against the Giants. With the slippery ball and the cold, Friday night is likely to be a low-scoring game, and the umps are unlikely to be generous towards us.

Containing the opposition's attack is the key to defeating any AFL team, and this is even more the case with the Giants with Toby Greene playing. Our entire team needs to be defensively alert from the opening bounce.

Any suggestion that the first 2 mins of the game can influence the outcome against quality opposition stems from review, rather than reaction and/or PTSD from similar experiences from a former era.
We are entering a new era.

So can we make the assumption that when we start the game we have a predetermined notion of our centre square setup that has been found wanting in all these instances?
IIRC all those instances have been relatively quick movements from the center bounce?

This

The fact that Ratts mentioned it at his press conference a couple of weeks ago is why this thread is here.

He drew attention to it. I reckon just a f***** coincidence that it's happened.

There are probably different circumstances each time and even for each of the consecutive goals

Get over it!!

I've said it before, whatever Ratten says to the team before they start a game or the second half does not work.
We will not be able to sustain slow starts vs good sides

Ratten must be saying something right at half time. We’re 5-0 in 3rd quarters.

Maybe it’s what Lade says?

Personally I don’t think what the coach says carries much credence…

What he does may have an effect? Player movement, game plan alteration..

But I think it would be rare that something a coach says would make players play better?

When running for a footy or going for a mark or tackle, the last thing on my mind was something a coach said. Footy is very innate, as is courage.

We just seem to look a bit flat when the ball is bounced and wake up after about 5 mins
