….and what can be done about it so it won’t happen again.

Another ten minutes of that and it would have been year over.

It looked like they were running out of legs.
Possibly the six day break, coming back from Perth (4 a.m. return Monday) and also a heavy surface.

Isn’t there some stat how we allow a 5+ goal run to the opposition in almost every game recently?

I would say that Hawthorn had set themselves at 1/2 time to come out and stretch our run knowing that we had 6 day break after the ground in Perth was reminiscent of Moorabbin mid 80's - they had a bucket load of rain the day before the game.

The Hawks would have thought themselves in the game because of this - and played like it after 1/2 time

We did well to secure the win given these conditions - It was literally the last quarter when we ran out of legs - they kicked 5 - we were by far the better team so had enough buffer. But this wont be mentioned in the Media [but you and I will know the truth]

Never in doubt.

A bit like the Eagles game the week before they couldn't miss in the end, and we kept kicking points, but we never actually stopped, it was just a matter of our scoring shots going the wrong side of the post.

They pulled the trigger and played high risk footy

And got through a few times

We missed chances

5.1 in the final qtr v 1.5 would have seen a comfortable win

I think overall we were by far the better team

Mainly tiredness from a few players. Poor old RoMa could hardly run at the end. But he couldn't have played much better than in the first half. You only need one or two players who tire, and who can't chase, to lead to easy opposition goals. Having him ruck for 90% of the game won't work against quality ruckman. I'm sure the coaching staff is well aware of that. Max needs to step up.

Do you think we lack leadership on the field??

Could that be a problem?

Dysfunctional forward set up? Max ignoring good leads/players in better positions was noticeable, was it not?

I think we almost lost that ala North vs Collingwood a few weeks back.

The players only came to life at about the 25 minute mark of the last quarter. For the first 20 odd minutes, our urgency deserted us. We made some dumb decisions going out of defense and then were on our heels. We also lost a string of centre clearances

Max King has a lot to learn about forward craft. However, I still think it's really important for us to have a third tall marking option up forward. When Membrey pushes up the ground to the wing, we then only have King as a tall target. He doesn't seem to know when to lead up or when to sit back and that causes some hesitation with the guys carrying the ball. If there was another tall target with football smarts then it would be much easier for players looking for a target. If this part of our game was fixed we'd be kicking another 4 or 5 goals per game.

Yes..well then..his hesitation makes him easy pickings for oppo defenders to gather and swarm him!! And our lack of another forward !! I guess Sharman just didn’t do enough..?? Liking Cooper down back now too..Well I now wonder if Highmore could come in and play forward ?? A swap for Coopers? Or what about Lienert. He could be our James Podsiadly!

Correct. Once the match looked on the line they came good. And yes, probably a bit heavy in the legs after playing on a bogmire last week.

But we do need to find resilience when the other team gets a bit of a run on. Easy to go into your shell and defensive when the best comeback possible is to kick goals. There is no pressure as good as scoreboard pressure.

Not that I wish to overly contribute to this Forum except to counter unfounded drivel, but, sitting in Row A behind the Interchange Bench, it was noticable that when Hawthorn countered with 2 goals in the third quarter, both Steele to the centre square and Hannebery to Interchange side wing were immediately onto the ground - and we responded from the next stoppage by Hannebery's handball to Crouch.

In the last we had some struggling players on the bench.

A result of 6 days and playing in the wet (again!)?

Maybe.

But as other games across the League have instructed, momentum swings and when confidence rises with momentum it is sometimes difficult to stop - including because luck plays a part as it did in the last quarter last night.

So the spills from a fierce contest.

They are not always going to favor one side.

It's the game of football with an odd shaped ball.

Agree about the missing tall target. Maybe it’s Hayes next season. Not sure who could do it now. Maybe Lienert. He’s big enough. Not sure whether he is a goal-kicker or that great a mark though.

King’s kicking needs a fair bit of work.

He also leads to and finds himself in places from which he is most unlikely to score. And that part of it comes down to forward craft.

Two goals five is a poor return from an 18-possession game by a full forward. Five goals two and we are kicking with gas.

Nice info. Thanks.
Did you notice positional changes, switches etc in the last 15? Is there a limit on the number of interchanges these days? Maybe we had used them up? No idea, but it had to be more than luck that contributed to the Hawks kicking five straight like that..Even at the final bell it looked like they were ready to kick more. I realized her blew a few chances…Leadership must really come into the picture when these late swings happen but I do recognize that plenty of games have featured them this year.

75 max interchanges. We had 71 when the final siren blew

Another ten minutes of that and it would have been year over.
It's what happened the last ten minutes of the third quarter. Pressure dropped, Hawks got a sniff. They were coming of three straight wins and did what they've done all year;kick multiple goals quickly.

Perhaps it was the effect of Hannerbery going to the bench. You should know, you would have completed a forensic audit of every step he took by now!

At least they stepped up in the last 5 minutes and defended really well.

Ross, Sinclair and Steele were particularly good.

I still think we will probably drop out of the 8 next week and won’t get back.
