Shane Wakelin ?

Post: # 513723Post CURLY »

Watching a Collingwood replay the other day and Wakelin was at fullback. He played very well taking on the big forwards. Does anyone have any thoughts or reasons as to why he was delisted? I know it happened eight seasons ago but could never really understand why he was let go for free.

I reckon it's fair to say Blighty made some perplexing decisions with the Wakelins.....

Had serious ankle/achilles issues. Club medical team at the time thought that he wasn't going to be able to play again so he was delisted.

i dont think he would have mattered at all during out poorer period of no success...

even last year or the year before we would have had a backline of wakelin, max, goose and fish...seems way to tall and immobile

i know one of them was traded for pick 4...was it the port or the woods one???

Daryl to Port while Shane was delisted.

Daryl went to Port in the pick 4 deal that saw Aaron Hamill to St Kilda and Luke Livingston to Carlton. Sam Cranage was part of it too, from memory.

this is a wild question....

but who would we have taken if we didnt use the pick 4 for sammy???

or did we trade wakeline in the knowledge our pick from the trade would be traded onto carlton specifically for sammy??

Fairly handy bunch from Pick 12 to Pick 20 (would exclude Davies out of that list - IIRC wasn't he the guy that said he would only play for Essendon?)

Davies never cracked it for a game.

Shaun Burgoyne & Daniel Kerr are the pick of that bunch.

Laurence Angwin was in ecstacy when told he was picked at #7.

I am pretty sure that Daryl wanted to go "home" to Port Adelaide an in effect "walked out". Shane wanted to stay but had injury concerns as expressed earlier. He was as well recovering from a massively busted jaw. I remember a radio interview with him where he said he had to feed from a straw. His sacking rivals that of Dean Rice for short-sightedness and disloyalty. Shane had also been at the Saints for years playing a large amount of reserves games before he came good around 1997 (missing out the Grand Final to some Swan's basket case reject who amassed one touch or so in the crucial game).

My memory is hazy, but I think the main problem with Shane Wakelin was that his prognosis after an achilles injury operation was okay. It was the subsequent golden staf infection that counted him out, medically speaking.

Good on him for going on to forge a terrific career with Collingwood.

Many short sighted decisions were made in the late 90s, early 00s. Monkhorst, Francis, Delaney, Gale, R Powell, Charles, F Campbell...just to name a few.

either timid tim knew what he was doing by ensuring we would have a few years at the bottom...thus low good picks plus priority picks...

or he had literally no idea at all...

because if he was to basically tank with all these old lackluster or just plain below standard players...then howcome he wasnt allowed to see the job through with the high draft picks and been given a few more years to coach them in at least?

Tim Watson resigned before he was pushed.

And yes, by his own admission, he had no idea.

Great bloke, but shizen coach. Smashed many phones though in 2000!!

Was it Malcolm Blight that didn't rate Jason Blake

And he was going to get the axe if Blighty had stayed ??

Blighty didn't rate anyone, including Max Hudghton or Robert Harvey.

Blighty wasn't a great judge.

Only was successful at Geelong on the back of Gary Ablett and successful at Adelaide through pure luck and good fortune. Notice how he wasn't able to sustain it?

Don't know why people put value in the opinions of Malcolm Blight.

And gone in the third year.

Both premierships they came from low in the eight. 1997, St Kilda should've won. 1999, Kangaroos kicked poorly.

I don't rate Blight, but you can rate him all you like.

yeh st kilda should have won but they didnt and the roos kicked poorly but the thing is you cant win back to premierships with just luck and a coach who has no idea what hes doing must have been doing something right .
