Post: # 608210Post Number 5 »

I couldn't find them in the Casey game!
Are they injured again?

Dunno but I don't reckon X should be an automatic inclusion anyway.

Heard Peter Brukner say on SEN that both are up for selection, though I think neither played in the VFL?

Noty sure about X but I know that Bakes has had many frustrating set backs with his shoulder and knee this year. It appears every time he is close to a game he either gets injured at Casey or pulls out with soreness.

I think I read elsewhere here that Bakes was a late omission from the Scorps team on Sunday

I might be wrong - but I don't think there is a Scorps game this weekend either - so reallyneither of them should be in contention for 2 weeks if we are winning.

Sore Saint Steven Baker fights to join finals quest

Jon Ralph | July 23, 2008 12:00am

ST Kilda's Steven Baker has a month to win back his place for a possible finals campaign after a minor setback.

Baker was two weeks into a comeback from knee and shoulder problems after back-to-back VFL performances, but withdrew from the Casey Scorpions side with soreness on Sunday.

Suspended for seven matches late last year, Baker sat out the first five games this season, then played Round 6-7 in the seniors.

He jarred his knee in Round 7, then required arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder after injuring it during his comeback VFL match in early June.

Casey has a bye this week, which means Baker will return in a fortnight, hopeful of pushing his claims.

The 2005 best-and-fairest winner is St Kilda's best lock-down tagger, a role that has been filled in recent months by Andrew McQualter.

Ruckman Michael Gardiner has put himself in the selection mix after two games at the Casey Scorpions.

He could replace the suspended Justin Koschitzke against his former side, the West Coact Eagles, at Subiaco Oval on Saturday.

But coach Ross Lyon said yesterday he was still to decide whether to play Michael Rix or Gardiner, with Jason Blake also fresh from a superb game in the ruck.

Gardiner has not played a senior game since injuring his hamstring against Sydney in Round 12, while Rix's only match this year was against Port Adelaide in Round 6.

"(Gardiner's) been training for a month, so he's reasonably well-conditioned and he's a good athlete," Lyon said.

"But Michael Rix has been really fiercely competitive and we know Rix has got a huge tank and can run and he's played on (Dean) Cox before, so we've got some decisions to make."

ST KILDA yesterday accepted Koschitzke's one-match suspension for striking, ruling him out of Saturday's game against West Coast in Perth.

Koschitzke had a two-game penalty halved by an early guilty plea for striking Hawthorn's Michael Osborne in the second quarter on Saturday. He will carry 54.69 demerit points to be activated if he is reported again in the next 12 months.

You have GOT to joking, Michael Rix!! If ever there has been a guy that has been VFL level only...
Bakes and X's comebacks are beginning to have Hammil like scenarios.

Thanks for that article, stinger.

Here's hoping Bakes can be fit and firing come Finals time.
Baker at his best would be a HUGE plus in the chase for a flag.

In the Social Club after the Hawks game it was announced that X was 2 weeks away....(I presume from playing for Casey).

disagree with you Mooksy.
X should earn his spot through the twos. Playing the younger guys is paying dividends. X hasn't played enough consistent football to be an automatic inclusion if fit.

There is no possible way that Rix can be selected over Gardi, provided he is fit.

Sorry I didn't word my sentence very well. I meant he shouldn't be an automatic inclusion.

I must be missing something here..does not

I don't reckon X should be an automatic inclusion anyway
and

he shouldn't be an automatic inclusion

...mean essentially the same thing? That being that he is not an automatic selection.

Jones has passed X in recent weeks for that spot in the 18. Now he will have to displace Eddy, Fiora, or someone else.

I hope X recovers eventually, but I think a few young guys we have now are just as effective over the season and haven't got the chronic injury problems of X, who has real problems in that area.
