Anzac day - Port v Saints in New Zealand?

Post: # 918693Post SainterK »

By Mark Williams

Recently, I heard Kevin Sheedy talking about New Zealand.

Sheeds was saying that we should include the Kiwis in our celebrations because they were as committed to the Anzac cause as the Aussies were and I reckon the next big step for the AFL, in regards to Anzac Day, would be to play a game in New Zealand.

Port Adelaide and St Kilda have built up a bit of a tradition playing against each other at AAMI Stadium on the Anzac Day weekend but I’d be more than happy for the club to give up that home game to play in New Zealand.

It would be a fantastic marketing exercise for both clubs and would be a great way for us to engage the New Zealanders, as we pay homage to the brave men and women who served and fought to protect both our countries.

Because of the time difference between Australia and New Zealand the game could be played before and as a curtain raiser to the game between Collingwood and Essendon at the MCG - an Anzac Day double-header.

Yeah, let's do that.

Fits in nicely with our screwed current schedule of 6 twilight games on Sunday plus one Monday night this year.

Seems like the AFL treat us as guinea pigs.

Are you able to give us the requests the Saints did to the AFL late last year?
I actually dont mind the idea. PA lose a home game and I get to go to another state of Australia.

In case you didn't get the news in Plugger66 land, New Zealand knocked back a chance to be an Australian state when Australia Federated in 1901

I think it is a bloody brilliant idea by Choco Williams. ANZAC Day nas the NZ in it for a reason, it is a good promotion of the game, and we get away from bloody AAMI stadium against Port where they seem to kill us every time.

it may also s.hit Maguire and the filth and Essenrabble moron supporters who think ANZAC Day belongs to them.

All Good.

Lance or James??

No, not sure if I want the club to participate in a cynical expansionist marketing exercise across the Tizmun. Whilst the nod to the ENZUKS is honourable, I can only see it disrupting the season.

Pretty good idea actually. I'd consider going for that game.

The other option for, not necessarily us, but for the AFL, would be a game in Darwin.

I think it's a great idea. Providing that both teams get a decent break before/after the game I don't see any problem.

Thought you meant Matt Maguire and wondered what Goose had to do with it all.

Eddie McGuire.

great idea, would be similar to travelling to perth. Here is a deal, we will play in that game and both sides only have to play one game in perth that year :)

Replace a trip to Moron Park with a trip to Fush & Chups Stadium?

In a heartbeat!

Plusses
-the travel is maybe 3 hours for us, 4 hours for PA.
-no feral PA fans to encounter at the ground
- Maguire will be peeved

Minuses
none that immediately spring to mind

A bye will be in the draw next year, maybe one prior & one after the fixture.

I think this idea is fantastic purely because it would upset the pies and dons.

And a good excuse for an overseas holiday without missing a footy game!

I think you will find that Ron Barrasi first floated the idea of some New Zealand involved in an ANZAC Day match in the pre game to this years match. He stated that in some way this day should include New Zealand.

Don't wait for the light at the end of the tunnel to appear, run down there and light the bloody thing yourself!

That'll only exist for one year. It's a shorter trip than Perth, should be OK. I still think the whole thing would become an attempt to market AFL in NZ as an alternative to Rugby, and thus, Port and the Saints would be the last teams they'd send.

I read somewhere that at the turn of the previous Century, there were 14 seperate Aussie Rule leagues or competions in New Zealand. It was very popular over there at that time. Rugby only got into the ascendancy at the time of or after the First World War.

Does Galipoli have an oval?
