Just saw this,
At least he was open and honest about it.
I honestly wouldnt look down on any of our boys for doing it.
They only have 10 or so years to make enough for a life time.
and by all reports the offers are outrageous!

yeah, the problem is the more he improves and comes into his old form over the course of the season, the more tempting they will make it for him.

This rather reminds me of Stewart Loewe in 1995, who as a similar stage of his career. There was a lot of talk about him moving to Perth and joining the Dockers.

Jeez, let's hope Beej can be as loyal as Buckets was.

Hmmm.... slightly worrying but I'm not overly concerned.

If we win the flag next year, I really wouldn't care who leaves the club to pursue better options. If we don't win the flag next year I couldn't see our current group being capable of getting the job done, so either way I wouldn't view it as the worst thing in the world. I'm just glad he is contracted for next year so we can get one last tilt.

Would love to see GWS sign up Gram or Kosi or someone like that at the end of the season, not because we would get any great compensation but simply because we would know that our better playesr would be safe from GWS the following year... perhaps even losing Gilbert wouldn't be the worst thing.

Two 1st round draft picks would soften the blow

<shrug> GWS is a once in a decade splashfest of dosh.

its insane stupidity.

Karmichael Hunt and Israel Falou are paid more than a million per year, GWS and GC have bigger budgets as the AFL wants them to be competitive immediately.

Old clubs are going to get screwed over.

The clubs knew this.

I hope they go after selwood or watts or others, but if they go after goddard its going to be damn hard to match their dollars.

Whatever ball says, he went for the dosh. the premiership was a bonus.

Heck he'd be the no.1 player, IMO if he's ever let loose, he's enough talent to be the no.1 at st kilda if not the competition.

you look at the money cambell brown pulls and think what the.

From an objective point of view, at the end of 2012, two 1st round draft picks who could give us a combined 20 years might be better than 4 or 5 more of Goddard.

Yeah, to the extent that the "M" word will resurface.

Great Western Kangaroos, Gold Coast Demons, anyone?

In saying this, if our "window" is closed, we sure as hell won't be safe from it :(

Not until the end of 2016 though. 9 games a week guaranteed for 5 years.

the best way to not merger is to win premierships....and even that hasn't helped north, brisbane, sydney, port, carlton, north, who have all put their hands out for 'please save us' dosh, throw in the dees, dogs and tiges as well. Freo, GWS and GS sucking on the public purse as well.

Aside from collingwood, essendon, and now with Pratts millions and the cashino cards, carlton are back in black, adelaide and WCE are among the few to have some control over their fate.

St Kilda fans, and Richmond fans come out of the woodwork with a sniff of success, but after so many years of near misses, there is a sense of fatalism.

I would imagine that BJ is one of a number of key players who the AFL would like to see move to the GWS at the end of this season.

The fact that BJ has a contract to the end of next season makes the AFL's task a little more difficult, but not impossible. If BJ can be persuaded that he wants to go, then the AFL would have no trouble pressuring the Saints to release him: the only person at our club who was ever prepared to stand up to Demetriou was GT, and he's long gone.

What will persuade the likes of BJ and others that they will want to stay is the chance of a premiership in the next coupe of years. That's why it is imperative that we do as well as we possibly can this year, and not tank for draft picks as as many were suggesting.

However, if BG was to go at the end of this year, i'ld be demanding a hell of a lot, including, but not restricted to:

2 of their 17 year olds from this mini draft s***
Top ten pick
Top 20 pick
Best Second teir ruckman in the country

While we'ld probably have to chuck in another experienced player for all tha (Gram/Kosi), I'ld be a bit more satisfied.

I think we are now perhaps the safest of the less fashionable Melbourne clubs. The move to Seaford may have annoyed some, but it has been a good move in a marketing sense: consolidating our exclusive association with the vast southern suburban area of Melbourne.

The Roos will always be in the gun, as they have no real geographical association with anywhere and can't attract many fans and members even when they are winning premierships. The Demons face similar problems. Richmond too have a bit of a geographical branding problem seem to have a lot more rusted-on fans, but surely can't be attracting too many new ones from Gen Y.

If you take those three clubs out of Melbourne, you would have a good geographical spread with the remaining six: Bombers (North), Hawks (East), Saints (South), Bulldogs (West), Carlton (inner city), Pies (social misfits from all over).

You cant be serious about Richmond. They have huge support, something we could just dream about. They aint going anywhere and I reckon Melbourne are safe for one reason, the name Melbourne. We are probably only ahead of the WB and North so anyone happy for clubs to merge or fold better get a little worried.

As for the OP, if BJ wants to go at the end of 2012 then let him. It will be rebuilding time then and we would get similar picks to Geelong for Ablett. It will be a good start and the draft will be back to normal by then.

Are you not a supporter of the St.Kilda Football Club?
See this the problem...The NEW frontier of footy relies on your passion, but it's asking you to follow a model that isn't what you love. The NEW model is in essence a franchise system, soon to be supported by free agency, cemented by the draft and before we can say boo we'll be following the Broome Kangaroos and the Cairns Demons...

Personally I prefer hanging onto the myth that is supporting the club I inherited from previous generations, but I know I'm living in a dreamstate...

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

And the pay off?

You'd have to live and work in Western Sydney.

Not for what ever they offer him would be worth the move.

obviously a rather cheeking way for Gary Lyon to divert a little bit of attention - I think we all saw through that one

How many live in Seaford. I think you will find that already many are living in a well to do gated estate in Sydney.
