Best St Kilda Team in the time I've been watching.

Post: # 1152017Post Moorabbin Man »

I've been watching the Saints since 1975, my first game being a Round 3 (1975) victory over South Melbourne at Moorabbin which was Brian Mynott's last game. Unfortunately, I didn't see Baldock, Stewart etc. So I thought I'd have a crack at selecting the best 22 I've seen since 1975. Please join in and post yours, indicate what year you started watching the Saints, maybe talk about your first game, and select yours from that time. Should hopefully create some interesting discussion.

Here's my best Saints 22 since 1975:

B: Max Hudghston Danny Frawley Justin Peckett

HB: Brendon Goddard Sam Fisher Trevor Barker

C: Austinn Jones Lenny Hayes (Capt) Gilbert McAdam

HF: Nicky Winmar Nick Riewoldt Nick Dal Santo

F: Stephen Milne Tony Lockett George Young

Rucks: Peter Everitt & Robert Harvey

Rover: Graham Gellie

Inter: Carl Ditterich, Nathan Burke, Fraser Gehrig, Glen Elliott

Emerg: Geoff Cunningham, Robert Elphinstone, Stewart Loewe

Coach: Ross Lyon

I wasn't around then, but knowing that he returned in 75 for a short stint, I would suggest he probably wasn't at his best that year.

Yeah, I deleted it and only left it up for a minute - I only realized he didn't fit the 75 date late.

David Grant's name always springs to mind.

Not sure where to fit him in, but he was probably the best in the comp in his position in the early '90s.

Definitely deserves an honourable mention.

These types of scenarios are almost impossible to compare, as the level of skill goes up enormously as the years go by.

Saw many games at the Junction Oval, including a C. Ditterich first game against Melbourne, who were rarely beaten. Saints won that day, which brought the house down. Sat behind and in awe of the legend calling the game on the radio - Jack Dyer.

Here's a couple of older "good ordinary players" - Verdun Howell (FB), Jimmy Guyatt (HB), Alan Morrow (ruck), Ian Stewart (centre), Neil Roberts (CHB), Eric Guy (HB) and ........ a D. Baldock ! To name a few.

Ahh yes, George Young. My first real fave.

Thought of him this week and the Brownlow of 1975 when he wasn't invited and for a moment there the young Dr S thought he was going to win it.

He's a big reason why I became addicted to this club of ours. :)

Someone that springs to mind considering our recent kicking woes is
Jason Heatley.
I was always confident when he was kicking at goal.
He probably doesn't fit into your side though.

You'd be quite happy with any of Young, Lockett or Heatley taking a shot after the siren to win a flag 8-)

Loved Heatley's great long, straight kicking. Our (now previous) Recruiters should hang their heads in shame for the number of guys recruited with "woeful" kicking skills. It's probably cost us our past 2 GF's.

Gawd, imagine the great George Young under Lyon's coaching- like McQualter, he would have been turned from a smart attacking player, into a defensive backwards-kicking forward, too scared to have a shot at goal from 50 metres!

Played tall though.

Played his best football as a classical Full Forward :)

Not sure he played as tall as plugger???

Back in those days....yes only 30 odd years ago 6'1" was a pretty big man.....thats the same size as lenny and dal......

I always loved the dual FF model.......one slightly shorter who played tall....and one huge bloke...

Its why i believe gehrig, hamill, riewoldt is our best fwd line....a good third tall

My dream Fwd line
Carey, ablett, lockett in 1993

Back on George
Nice to have him as a third target......

was just stumbling around on AFL Tables looking at some of the names above and then the 1966 season. it was pretty interesting, yes for us but also how richmond managed to finish 5th (the 9th of a top 4 system ;) ).

in the 18 round season, richmond was on top of the ladder after round 14. they then lost their next 2 (to coll & geel) to slip to 5th, but won their last 2. but all four teams above them also won their last 2 so richmond ended up missing the finals. how cruel.

coll 15-3 (60 pts) 157%
stk 14-4 (56 pts) 143%
geel 14-4 (56 pts) 138%
ess 14-4 (56 pts) 121%
___________________
rich 13-4-1 (54 pts) 123%

(sorry, off-topic but not worth it's own thread)

Graham Gellie- was one of the best midfielder rovers I had seen until injury cut him down- could have been one of the game's greats.

My earliest, fondest moments of the Saints were George Young.
At the time it seemed he could do anything up forward.
Kicked some nice bags for us.

Very fond memories indeed howlinwolf, especially for me wrapped up in this :)
