Your favourite year?

Post: # 1183008Post LENNY LEADS THE WAY »

Lots of good years for us saints fans in the last decade without the ultimate success.

Many memorable games and many highlights.

What's ur stand out favourite game and favourite year?

For me the standout year is 2004 so much young talent coming thru mixed with some experienced guns.

Most memorable game for me is round 14 2009 saints vs cats.

Discuss ur most memorable moments

2003 was uplifting because we were finally competitive and picked up some decent scalps.

2004 was fun and probably the most enjoyable football I've watched.

2009 was surreal.

But for mine 2010 was my favourite, despite the agonising end. We came through so many controversies and set backs, were bashed by the media and suffered major injuries yet we still didn't lose on Grand Final day. After the replay we think about what could have been, but before it I thoroughly enjoyed what was.

I saw one game live in 2004, I was living in Sydney...

So has to be 2009 for me

Would have to be 1966 - if not, 2009 with 18 wins (or was it 19) on the trot and being screwed out of the Premiership by Geelong and a goal umpire's incompetence.

2003 was great lots of excitement lots of promise
2004 was even better young guns firing GTrain Hamill lots of great memories
2005 fizzed out we were strong but couldn't get the players fit
2006 looked like we had peaked early in 04 and were on the downward trend
2007 boring footy looked like the new coach was a spud Gardi looked like a waste of time
2008 the end of the Harvey era the year was up and down and some how we managed to jag a spot in the top 4
2009 it all just clicked the players on the park the run of good form the stars just all alighned but we fell short
2010 the year of the fight we were constantly getting knocked down but we kept on coming we threw everything possible at that shot at the flag it's any wonder we had nothing left in the replay
2011 the worst year the knocks came early a d the ability to get back up was failing we looked unhappy we played un happy and in the end ended without a fight ...

2012has a bit of the 2003 feel to it the excitement about the kids is not as big as 03 but the new begining a fresh game plan a more open club to the members ... I'm looking forward to it

That Elimination final was such an outstanding game. 2009 for me or 1997.

Ive been a Saints member since 1989, when I was 8 years old, so thats 22 seasons to choose from.

1991 was a fantastic year. Lockett, Winmar, Frawley, Loewe, Mcadam, Davenport, Pekin. Some cracking games at moorabin, and we made the finals for the first time in, like, 20 years.

1992 was similar, and the elimination final vs collingwood that we won by 8 points (the first final we'd won since the 70's) was one of the best games I've ever seen.

1997 was the 2nd best season I've ever seen us produce. Finished on top of the ladder, best game of the season was the prelim vs North. Aussie Jones, Tony Brown, Joel Smith, Jason Heatley, Harvey, Bourke, Loewe, Winmar.

1998 wasn't bad, but ended badly with 2 straight finals defeats and the sacking of Alves.

2004 was fresh and exciting.

2005 ended badly. The prelim loss to Sydney was the 2nd most heartbreaking loss I've ever experienced behind the '09 GF.

2009 best season I've ever seen us produce

2010 couragous effort.

Best games: 1992 elimination final vs Collingwood. '97 prelim vs North. '04 round 6 vs Brisbane. '09 round 14 vs Geelong.

1978 - Mike Patterson - Sidey, Barker, Elliot, Hunt, Carl, Young, Mad Dog, Colling, Sarau

1987 - Return of Baldock - Winmar's first year, Lockett's first century and Brownlow, Rod Owen beating Carlton at Princes Park on his own everywhere but on the scoreboard, five wins and a row and six out of seven, including a ten goal thrashing of Collingwood, and who could forget, the incomparable Trevor Barker once again.

1993 - beating Collingwood at Collingwood, Carlton at Carlton, North at the MCG on Friday nights which never used to happen in the nineties, and the mighty Gilbert McAdam.

1991 was brilliant.

Lockett
Full houses and lockouts at Moorabbin.
First time we made the finals in my lifetime, and that roar when Macadam kicked the first was something I'll never forget

92 is like the sequel Rocky/RockyII
Very similar, this time we win the first final.

!966.
I was 12 years old, sitting in the old Richmond members' stand at the grand final on a glorious sunny day. I was about 20 metres away from where Barry Breen wobbled his awkward punt around the behind post. The next thing I knew, Tuddenham had taken the ball from the kick-in and was hurtling down the ground. He kicked a long ball into the forward line. Bobby Murray soared to take the saving mark and drop-kicked the ball to the wing where Alan Morrow marked and the siren sounded. The feeling was euphoric.
I remember being swept up by the crowd leaving the MCG and floating home to Mordialloc on an old red rattler.
The next day there were quotes in the paper from old geezers saying that they could die happily now they'd seen the Saints win a grand final.
I'm now approaching a similar age to those old fellas and still wait expectantly for the second.

65 was good, 66 obvious....97 was a great year after the terrible start. We won game after game in 97 in great style.

A year I remember fondly was '87. We started to emerge from the darkness. Doc was coach, Plugger starting to really dominate. The game at Moorabbin against the dogs when Plugger got the ton was a great moment.I was there for the first time in years on a rare trip to Melbourne. So, 1987, for the reason that the light appeared at the end of the long dark tunnel.

The 2005 Elimination final in Adelaide against the Crows is probably my favourite game. I attended and it was a crazy night

09 was a great season in terms of everything up until 3/4 time of the Grand Final then my memory goes a bit fuzzy

I do not have a favourite in my lifetime thus far although 2010 was fantastic as everyone else wrote us off as a genuine threat however it was fantastic knowing deep down that come the bounce of the Qualifying final against the Cats I believe we were in with a good chance of victory. We played superbly in patches and it was enough to get us over the line.

From there I expected us to beat the dogs with our eyes closed and again I expected the football club to give more than a good performance in the Grand Final.

Although after the Goddard mark in GF1 and the subsequent goal I do remember calling my father who was in Hungary and told him we had finally done it. Bugger....
