The VFL watchers seem to think not… are there better VFL/WAFL/SANFL options?

Well there is about 30 sides so I suggest close to 30.

If he is the best FB n the VFL yes. But as far as I know, he is not,. And there are 20 year olds who played well (better than Dowler as far as I know) as KPDs this year (Hartigan, Noonan, Tighe) who will develop further next year...

So: no need to be Sandy-centric.. get the best available! If that is Dowler, .. yes.... I am no expert on 2012 VFL form, but just dont think it is

There is a thread of a bloke from Port Melbourne names Sam Plemming. If we are going for a VFL recruit we should look no further.

He is about 194 cm and around 90-95 kgs plus he is mid 20's. I rarley see him get beaten (I watch Port almost every week) Should look at him with a pick in the 40's or maybe a rookie list spot for a year and see how he goes

Sam Plemming is a good player at VFL level, not sure if he is fast enough for AFL, or big enough for what we want.

Lucas Cook - just been delisted from dees - listed as a forward by highlights reel show him all over the ground including the back - would need to put on a few kgs but could be a backman in the mold of dustin fletcher 196cm - as discussed on another thread many backs started as forwards --

Can you tell us about them and how they play and how many times you have seen them play. That is important because you can judg whether guys can play like AFL footbllers. I have never heard of Noonan and no nothing of Hartigan.

Noonan played either FB or 3rd tall back in the finals for Port. Former Old Xavs player, only young and reasonably swift from what I saw.

Listed as 193cm and 92kgs, so not really big enough for what we're hoping for. Did get caught like a deer in the headlights a couple of times.

Worth a look, but I'd be hoping for more

Lee kicked six on Hartigan in limited time (Foxtel Cup) This could mean that Lee is very good or Hartigan is very ordinary.

tall defenders. Noonan was a fwd in the amos but has gone down back and had a good year for Port at Fullback- hes a bit light but is still bulking up . Not disimilar to Ferguson - but maybe a little advanced and has played on taller FFs. Quite athletic.
I think Hartigan is a bit more known - and might lack a yard of pace or "closing speed" as they like to say. Noonan might be worth a shot.

Of those playing in this year's grand final, Port's young goalkicking midfielder Mitch Wooffindin and defender Dan Noonan will attract the most interest from AFL recruiters, while more established midfielders Shane Valenti, Sam Dwyer and Chris Cain have been overlooked in recent seasons.

And there were signs the career of Borough defender Dan Noonan might just be starting with AFL clubs set to take notice of the the stingy defender, who earned big plaudits for his work deep in the backline.

Do you mean 2 or 3 times and that would be at the most. I suggest we get neither. Hopefully better options in the SANFL or WAFL or stick with Tom Simpkin because i have no doubt he would have those 2 you mentioned covered.

While that's a valid point, we've seen how difficult it is for a defence to gel if there are a couple of injuries or underdone players, let alone playing with a group of completely unfamiliar players. Zac Dawson sure as hell isn't a talented full back, but he generally didn't get too many kicked on him because of the support of his team mates. Don't think Hartigan would have had that kind of help in the foxtel cup.

I agree simpkin has them covered but i think Noonan plus Simpkin would be nice long term.
Noonan is worth a shot as a mid-late pick.
For the record I have been saying for 2 years good tall defenders dont grow on trees and we would miss Zac.
Fact is there are no gun tall defenders available anywhere. No cheap/easy gets. We need to develop our own. Noonan might be a 2 year development but thats reality. A Darren Glass or a Daniel Talia isnt going to stroll into Seaford and say 'hi guys Im here!'
