Gilbo's new role- The Age

Post: # 1305308Post saintbrat »

''One of the things that has come out as a result of the limited rotations in the pre-season is being forced to experiment with players to be more flexible,'' Watters said of the experiment of using Gilbert on the ball.

''So Sam will be used at the defensive end, the front end and in the midfield for us this year. It's fantastic for us and shows his versatility and strengths as a player.

''From an endurance and speed point of view he has all the attributes to play anywhere on the ground - he has elite speed and endurance and has good height, can mark well overhead. So no doubt at times throughout this year he will be used in those roles.

''As we look forward and the way the game is going [with capped interchanges] and the demands of the game, endurance running and that versatility is important. There's a lot of players who can play two roles, if you like, or dual roles, but [Gilbert] falls into the category where he is - or could be - a triple threat.''

I wish I could bump back when we had this discussion as a forum, I'm sure there was a thread on Gilbo going into the midfield.

I notice Scott did not mention his crap disposal, and marvellous ability to turn the pill over.

And also now someone in some earlier post who showed surprise at the length of his contract extension, may see the reasoning behind it eh?

Could make bigger type ruck-rover.
Hopefully he and CJ will run & handball more and leave the kicking to Siposs &others.

No way Gilbo and CJ will ever be in the same midfield. I'd say this is the end of CJ, he'll join Kosi at Sandy.

it's encouraging that the coach iis ahead of the game on what the interchange cap will mean when it comes in.

Presumably it will slow the game considerably. Perhaps we will see a trend towards two ruckmen.

Only if the second ruckman can mark the ball in the forward line otherwise they are dead.

When I saw the heading on the thread I thought he was getting a job as a reporter, just like Travis Cloke on Channel Eddie

He prob has lost some of that for me but only a few years ago didn't he lead the comp for intercept marks? took a lot overhead and going back with the flight of the ball.

Then he took a photo...

That already happens. he is the ruckman. Talking about the second ruckman and where he plays.

Why couldn't you leave the ruckman in the ruck and play the other a kick behind the play. Just throwing up ideas here. Why couldn't it work?

Because you dont have slow players who are no good below their knees as the spare man down back well not if you are trying to win. A spare man down back if different to a kick behind the play. That person still does the ruck work that is why he is only a kick behind the play so he is close enough to go up in the ruck.

They could dominate the air a kick behind play, so there would be advantages as well.

Anyway, if the coach thinks as you do - and he probably does because it is the current way of thinking - either Hickey or Lee will miss. It seems a shame as both look players with big futures.

Also, really it's not ideal for Ben to be doing all of the ruckwork all day. He's a very good player, but it is asking a lot.

He does play a kick behind the play.

From what I've seen, hickey is way in front of lee.
