2016 Team...

Post: # 1467517Post fugazi »

Based on what we've seen I think this list does have a future.

Assuming the retirements / delistings of:
Dempster, Fisher, Roo, Hayes, Jones, Gwilt, Maister and TDL

I reckon all these guys can play and have a huge opportunity to make it:

B:.......Geary..............Delaney................Gilbert
HB:.....Wright...............Bruce.................Shenton
C:.......Billings.............Dunstan.............Armitage
R:.......Acres.................Longer...............Newnes
HF:.....Templeton..........Draft pick #1..... Webster
F:.......Monty..................Stanley.............Siposs

Bench: Murdoch, Saunders, Ray, Curren

EMG: Savage, Milera, Lee, Ross, Hickey, Weller

HArd to see make it: Dunnell, White, Pierce, Simpkin

Would love to see Roberton make a comeback, cos he can play and should slot into the backline.Up to him.

Obviously need to draft tall forwards as #1 priority

Each of the back 6 chosen by you are suspect kicks at best. Compare them with Hawthorns and you will see why we will struggle for an extended period. Prepare for the worse.

Don't agree with every selection, and hope roo might still go on in 2016, but like the positivity of the thread!! We've certainly brought in some talent, fingers crossed with luck, good development we can rise sooner rather than later!

I agree with 8856.
The listed backline disposal would need to improve radically.
I reckon you have missed another draft pick as there is 15 and then 16.
So some shrewd drafting and trading and we will have more there than you list.Add to that club equalisation and free agency and we're cashed up.
Plus Rooey and Monty will still be playing imo.
Also from all reports Pierce could be a keeper.

I think by 16 we should be turning the corner otherwise the grand plan of 18 will be a pipe dream.

What about Jack Stephen? Do you think we will trade him out for the big forward or a good mid?

Both Stanley and Milera WILL NOT still be at St.Kilda FC in 2016. I'll even put money on it.

One draft pick in 2 drafts.

No new mids.

I hope we can do better than this.

pierce will be a player and you shouldn't be giving up hope on white at this early stage...

It's really too early to tell what our 2016 team will look like. There are so many players on the list who effectively have this year and next to prove themselves. By 2016 the following players could all either be best 22 or not on the list:

Lee
Markworth
Murdoch
Roberton
Ross
Saunders
Shenton
Simpkin
Siposs
Stanley
Weller
White

Then there should be 5-6 early draft picks pushing into the team and we'll have some serious money to throw at FA's if both the salary cap is raised and we have to pay it in full.

If I had to have a very speculative crack at a 2016 team from our current list it'd be something like this

B: Gilbert (29), Delaney (26), Geary (27)
HB: Webster (22), Bruce (23), Wright (22)
C: Acres (20), Armitage (27), Newnes (23)
HF: Siposs (23), Stanley (25), Billings (20)
F: Hickey (25), Lee (25), Templeton (20)

Foll: Longer (23), Dunstan (21), Steven (26)
Int: Montagna (32), Saunders (21), Curren (23), Shenton (25)

That is a side that would be working hard to stay out of the bottom four. Hopefully we can snare some genuine A-grade talent to push some of the battlers out of the team.

Whichever way you cut it, there is a distinct lack of A grade talent in the 2016 team and its unlikely to climb out of the bottom 3.

If we define:
A grade as those guys who are elite ie would be in contention for an AA spot and very highly sought after on the open market (eg over the years we've had plenty such as Roo, Lenny Dal, BJ etc) ,
B Grade are good honest soldiers who would still make it into a top 8 team (eg McEvoy),
C Grade are the battlers who would struggle to hold a spot in a top 8 team, but may hold down a reasonable regular spot in a bottom 8 team,
D grade are sub-standard ie struggle to hold a regular spot in a bottom 8 team or still young and developing

then Id suggest at the start of 2016 we only have Jack Steven as a potential A Grader. By seasons end Billings Dunstan & Acres may start to be pushing into that category as well - I think all 3 could have break out years in 2016. On the current list, the only other longer term (ie 2018+) A Grade possibilities IMHO are maybe Newnes and Webster - and if you want to pick a couple of smokeys to come from the clouds, Id say Hickey and Wright. The last 2 I'm sure will raise eyebrows but given a solid run without injury in 2015 - 2017, I think those 2 guys have huge upside and could be potential A Graders in the 2018+ time-frame.

Next 2 drafts its critical we land another 2-3 genuine A grade prospects per draft if we are to be any chance of climbing back into the top 8 in 2018 and beyond, otherwise we just wont have the cream that helps us rise to the top and will get stuck in that mid table rut.

I rate Tom Hickey and Wright. Both pretty good signs so far with massive up sides. I think Saunders will surprise people in a few years. He has something about him. He's been playing the defensive forward role that is really a sacrificial one. He is used like we used mini and Gamble where he is expected to run back to help the defenders then race back the other way to lock the ball in for the forwards. Long term midfielder IMO.

Luckily we will finish bottom 3 the next 3 years because without being rude to thos players picked none of those side would win a game.

So if Hickey, Longer and Pierce are all going to make it, we have a problem.

The big query on Hickey is his durability. Loads of talent but can his body hold up to the rigours of AFL.
