Best imported team since 1990

Post: # 1526026Post older saint »

As we have now hired a recruiter to look specifically at other current players thought it might be interesting to come up with a team to see how our trade/recruiting history is. Criteria is they must have played a game of AFL with another club before coming to StKIlda since 1990.

B: Voss, Dawson, Dempster
HB: Gram, Morris, Young
C:Ray, Fletcher, Black
HF:Schnieder Hamill, Guerra
F: O'Brien, Gerhig, Heatley
Foll: Gardiner, Powell, Keogh

Int Harding, Newport, Peake Fiora

Others: Longer, Hickey, Bruce , D Anderson, Knobel, S King Vidovic , Savage, Penny Roberton

Clearly not a team of superstars , but wouldn't expect so either. To me Voss, Gram, Dempster, the stand outs in regard to what they were to what they developed into. Gerhig , Hamill, Ray already good players when they came across.

Interesting a lot of Ruckmen recruited from other clubs.

Note that games and performance considered in some of my selections, e.g. Fiora makes bench above guys i think will be good for us such as Savage, Roberton etc

May have missed a few

Good effort.

I reckon I could fit Tim Pekin on the interchange ahead of Fiora.

Others to consider, Gavin Mitchell, Kristian Bardsley, Luke Beveridge, Stephen Lawrence.

Good call, Kosi! Tim Pekin was terrific in defense for us.

Stephen Powell could be yet another to consider.

Not many of them played after 1990.

Does Milney qualify? VFL Reserves Premiership player with Bombers.

I don't remember Penny Roberton playing for us.

Lazar I don't think was imported. He played one game one year, got injured, and took a couple of years to re-debut for his second game. (I think)

He actually started his career with North Melbourne. But like Milney, had never played a senior game before arriving at St.Kilda.

If the rule is 1 senior game at another club then that seems fair enough.

Agreed Tim Pekin was a major oversight only behalf . Powell already in . Pekin in Fiora out. I thought Vidovic played a game for North, but stand corrected.

I wonder how a best exported team since 1990 would go against this one? I couldn't begin to formulate a team but it would comprise players that played with us and then left and played at least 1 game elsewhere - like Plugger, Goddard, etc.

The top 10 that have left wouldn't need another 12 players to beat that other team.

Give it ago but might need some help

B: Dawson, S Wakelin, Shanahan
HB: Carr, D Wakelin Guerra
C: McAdam, Simpson, Black
HF: J Smith Hall, Lappin
F:O'Brien, Lockett, T Lynch
Foll: Everitt, Ball, Fletcher

Int: D Grant, Sierokowski, Winmar, Gwilt

Tried to do it based on what they did elsewhere hence Winmar on the bench

Couple stand outs to me that didn't really get a go and went to to do well were Sean Simpson ( Geelong) and Matthew Carr ( Freo)

Okay, good one. I'm not sure this team would thrash the other one though (except maybe for Plugger as Dawkson would be on him).

Great effort. Let me have a go, see how similar it is:

FB: Dempster, Penny, Voss
HB: Gram, Morris, Young
C: Ray, Fletcher, Pekin
HF: Guerra, Hamill, Schneider
FF: O'Brien, Gehrig, Heatley
R: Gardiner, Black, Powell
IC: Newport, Harding, Russo, Keogh

Others: Bardsley, King, Fiora, Beveridge, Dawson, Knobel, Ackland, Lawrence, T Delaney, Peake, Mitchell, Ralphsmith, Ryan, Callaghan, Roberton, Plapp, Capuano, Neill, L Delaney, Fletcher, Bingham, Polo, Muller, Kickett, Maister, Birss, Attard, Francis

Pretty similar really. I rate Penny comfortably ahead of Dawson, though I think Zac is also a good player. And I really rated Timmy Pekin so I found a starting 18 spot for him.

Not much to choose from really! That list of "others" is mostly spuds. Let's hope L Delaney pushes his way into this team in the next couple of years.
