The other courage- Guerra story

Post: # 1558460Post saintbrat »

the courage of changes outside football.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/b ... 7411656022
He credits Rachel and son Jack, who was born in March, for providing the strength to fight on. “I would’ve gone back to punting and lying,” he said. “I owe everything to Rachel, to all of them, for the support they gave me.”

Guerra weaned himself off gambling and has not had a bet, he says, since January. Rachel is in charge of the finances and she allows him $250 a week to live.

Now playing coach at Chelsea in the Mornington Peninsula League, Guerra will soon join the AFL’s overhauled responsible gambling program, which will be headed by Schwarz.

He wants to help footballers — some of whom he knows to have problems — and the TAC Cup kids.

“I want to help people, I see it as a problem across the whole of the AFL,” Guerra said.

“I’ve got no one to blame but myself and I’m not looking for sympathy. I just want to tell people there are dark days, very dark days, and make them think twice about having a bet.’
may this reach to others.

From pissing off the balcony in Adelaide after a Saints prelim to pissing it up the TAB walls.

Glad Goo has turned it around though.

On the assumption that Rachel and he are still living together I was surprised how generous she is with his "allowance"

Rachel is in charge of the finances and she allows him $250 a week to live.

Assuming she is paying all the bills first. That is a lot of "spending" money per week even if it does include petrol etc.

Rachel must be an amazing lady.

And a few pissed off ones, like that Preliminary Final against the Bloods. That effort, or lack thereof caused him to be delisted.

I will also never forget his missed kick off the ground against Port that cost us a place in a grand final. No, I'm not a fan.

That's not much at all really. $100 for petrol and $20 per day for lunch doesn't leave you much change.

Give it a rest. You really are a miserably sod of a man.

As Teffers posted, you really have to be giving it to someone don't you?

IMO if one is struggling with finances $20 every day on lunch is way too much.... Though each to their own I guess. I certainly would prefer to put it towards a nice holiday (but other probably think that is a waste too  )

Surely you are taking the piss SR. I need at least 400 a week to get by. No way would 250 ever be enough.

If that was the case it would be 600. My footy club costs a fortune.

$20 for lunch? I've been out of Australia for a while but since when does it cost that much for one lunch for a person on the breadline?

But I suppose I see your point. It all adds up.

Looking forward to you mob getting on the Age Pension. $611 fortnightly for everything. You definitely want to own your own house by then too.

So he admits he had no control with gambling, acted on impulse but never bet on footy.

Right.

Just like all the other footballers with gambling problems, somehow they had restraint only when it came to betting on footy.

Well you can get a tostie and a drink for about 12 to 14 dollars. Add a coffee at some point during the day and you don't have any change out of 20 bucks, do you?

Well that's what it used to cost me. If the guys at work were doing lunch at an Indian, Italian or Chinese cafe it used to cost me between 20 to 30 bucks depending whether I had a wine or not. Not excessive expenditure.

Forget the petrol, go lpg and take sandwiches and a thermos, the rest is beer money. Much better budget

I could never survive on the age pension mate, but my mother in law does and she still gives money to some of her spendthrift offspring.
