Is that a younger, more svelte GT I see there ...dashing out of defence. Ahhh, the ravages of time.

Why would they be unfamiliar?

I was probably at that game. I was watching it last night from a distance with the sound off and though I recognised nearly every player, could put names to only a few, GT, Jeff Sarau, Bruce Duperouzel, Doug Cox (I think), Simon O'Donnell, Peter Keil ... and of course, Joffa Cunnimgham

Not our most glorious era.

What Beano, Goro, little Greggy Packham. Unfortunately I remember that era too well. I had a look at the list and remember all the players who played that day and there was some pretty ordinary players back then. I suppose it is expected when we finished last in the next 3 or 4 years.

8 of the 20 had played 2 games or less before that game.
Geoff Linke's 2nd and last game for the Saints
Darryl Cowie's first.

Had high hopes for Linke. No idea why but thought he was going to be a player.

great memories, I was going out with the sister of a player from that team and went to the 82 GF where the Saints team lost the reserves GF to Geelong, I think that was Barry Breens last game in Saints colours and was Cat Colling capatain coach. Pretty sure in that reserves team were Milan and a few others, should have won

Still got that game on video somewhere in this house. One of Ormonds greats played that day as well, the great Andrew Jobling.

Those better informed will be able to answer definitively, was that Cox fellow in the backline a quality footballer??

That match was before my time, but watching him in that short segment he seemed a real player with height, skill and dash.

Thommo looked very likely too if not a little ungainly.

He was quite a good player though only had a short career with us (think he ended up at Richmond).

If I recall correctly, there was some dispute with Essendon over who he was zoned to.

When we played the Bombers at Waverley our banner read "Hands Off Our Cox"

Especially Peter Zychla who clearly must be last on the alphabet in AFL footy.

That banner would be banned in today's sterile word sadly

The first 2 are nic names from watching footy and the third is what I called him. Do you call out go Hayes or get the ball Armitage? Having said that if you lived in east Bentleigh you knew Goro.

As I remember the Cox controversy it was something to do with him having signed originally with Richmond I think not Essendon. Half way through his first season Richmond took a case to the VFL to say he was their player and we had broken the rules in playing him. We had all our points won to that point (not many) deducted and slipped below Footscray and Melbourne on the bottom of the ladder. Ultimately we must have appealed because our points were restored and Cox remained a Saint at least for a short while. Then later he left and went to Essendon.

As for Thomas he was a very good CHB for a short while before injury slowed him down, Matt Maguire always reminded me of GT

We were an ordinary side back then, the Pies Blues game on before it was a completely different standard interesting that half that Carlton team was in Saints colours not too long afterwards - Sheldon Marcou McConville Wow Jones

I'm sure it was a zoning issue with Cox. He played a handful of games in Mildura before heading to SA. Was therefore zoned to Richmond.

Cox was somehow claimed by Richmond and there was legal argument over him regarding his Zoning. My only claim to fame is that I made the banner up and wrote "Hands off Cox" and stuck it up at Waverley when I was a teenager. My Mum would not let me write "Our Cox". Pictures of it made the Sunday papers the next day.

At the end of the game (we got thumped of course), I retrieved the banner and took it home on the bus to Southland (that took forever from Waverley). We ripped it up after hanging it across the back window of the bus and shitting the driver.
Cox worked out we were going no-where and went to Essendon where he promptly did nothing.
