Eli is smashing the door down for a senior birth & now we have no chance of making finals really its time to look at some of these boys more.

There is a group of boys playing consistently well at VFL level-

Templeton, Sinclair, Murdoch, Lonie, N Coughlan, Brandon White

Others with potential but a bit of a way off are N O Kearney, Bailey Rice.

Players like Templeton and McKenzie & Sinclair are the next wave of players that nee dto step up like Seb Ross has this year.

With Billings, Carlisle and hoefully Freeman to come in next year this team is reaaly starting to take shape & show some depth.

agree he deserves a crack and i'd be very surprised if he doesnt come in. His performance in the 1s will be interesting though as he has failed to make the step previously. Similarly and disappointingly with Lonie. He is really suffering from the 2nd year blues in the 1s yet smashes it in the twos. Would be very surprised if he wasnt dropped.

Couple of the others you mention i'd love to see in again, in particular D-Mac.

Regarding White - i haven't seen a great deal of him, understand from others the kid can play, but not sure his body is afl ready??

Brandon White will be a rebounding tall defender & will eventually take the place of Fisher &/or Dempster.

Im hearing good things about White also & Im hearing good things about Nick Coughlan too.

The players that have gone backwards have to work their butts off to make it long term, there is no secret.

Lonie, Sinclair, Templeton are prime examples.

Eli can boost his numbers with little give and go's especially around the half back/wing. I watched the VFL a couple of weeks ago and he literally got like 3 possessions in 10 seconds standing next to a guy and they handpassed back and forth to each other. He needs to become a really damaging player that can break the lines and can run all day. His kicking is ok without being brilliant but neither was Daisy Thomas and he became elite with his tank and willingness to take the game on and run, run, run. I like his energy and enthusiasm. But whether he can translate his VFL numbers to the AFL is the question. He still seems to go MIA for big periods in the AFL and that is probably a fitness/body size thing. But I'd love to see him get a good go in these last lot of games.

I saw some of the Sandy match on the weekend but was pretty distracted, talking and kid wrangling, didn't really notice Eli that much.
Watching his highlights from the game on the saints site most of his kicks seemed to be to no effect. The vision ends after the kick, indicating we didn't retain possession.
A few of these were inside 50s as well. A fair number of quick kicks out of the pack.
Nice bit of work where he wins the ball back after aerial contest though.

I disagree with your "prime examples" of players who have gone "backwards" and personally I believe that all players need to work their buts off. The ones that do not like Buddy White et al get the heave ho.

Sinclair and Lonie only joined the club last year and exceeded everyone's expections by playing as much and as well as they did. Basically they over-achieved and so this year is really back to more of a normal year 2 and particularly as one was a rookie pick, and the other a mid-range pick. Increased competition for spots has meant that they have to do more to stay in. ie Sinclair was ok offensively, but his defensive game lacked. Playing for Sandy too has meant that both Lonie and Sinclair have been able to play midfield which will help to develop them more that if thy only played the small forward role.

Templeton was a rookie too that went well very early before having that horiffic injury that is always hard for a player to come back from.

There is a lot that an AFL player needs to do and learn these days before most get it all down pat and so it does take years to develop your talent in mind and in body. Ross is a prime example.

Sam Fisher 191cm/94kg and Sean Dempster 191/90 are big men who play even taller.

White would more likely replace Gilbert, Roberton or Riewoldt (wing)

I like Eli. I think he is a player. Doesnt do anything elite but is neat, reliable and tougher than he looks.

He's in serious danger of winning the Liston. It would be a testament to his form and consistency at the lower level, but like the Morrish, it isn't always a positive on your CV. Suggests you're too good for VFL, but not quite good enough to be an AFL regular. I've liked ELi from the get go. That badly broken arm was a bigger setback than many realise. I think he'll make it, eventually.

IMO the stage we are at we now have ample depth players. You can argue which ones actually get used in the "best 22" and which ones are kept or delistd. But to now progress up the ladder we need to get more cream players. Elite players. More depth players is now going to make no difference. We have ample of them.


With Curren you would imagine that this will be his last season as he is competing with Ross, Newnes...and then the tier underneath of Acres, Minch, Lonie, Sinclair etc, and then the tier under that of Temp etc. With Gresham looking a certaintly it is time to churn througha few of our mids and smalls in search of some gun mids by trade, draft or FA.
