Coming out of contract end of 2017

Post: # 1666029Post Vazelos »

Some potential list management issues coming up if we don't Finalise the following players:
Roberton
Webster
Billings
Sinclair
All out of contract end of year.

Roberton is in AA form and a rumour Hawks are throwing some dollars at him. Unfortunately he could cost more than had we signed him up earlier. How could we leave this so late?

Webster is in career best form even though still has improvement in him.

Billings doesn't have the currency he had when the Essendon rumour came out they wanted him and AR said " I nearly choked on my cornflakes when I read that!" Sure that deal will get done and not a worry with Sinclair either I would not think.

Veterans like Roo and Montagna will go another year on recent form with reduced $$ offers I would think and Gilbert will be sweating on a new contract.

I think Holmes will be cut end of year.
A couple of others on there can't remember to comment.

Dempster frees up a little bit of room.

As for Billings - he still may become a good player - very likely he will be a 200 gamer just not sure of what level that will be at, but worth a few $$$ to keep. Throw some decent dosh as Robbo. The poor bugger already has 3 kids and he's only 25. That's insane!

Hence the reason not to pay ridiculous amounts to try and get players like Fyfe or Martin to the Saints. Need to protect the fabric of the team first.

Bains is only too aware that paying over 60% of our salary cap to just 10 players was the real reason we did not win a premiership when our window was open.
The remainder of our list were monkeys getting paid peanuts.
If we cut a monkey, we were only left with peanuts to recruit another monkey to replace him.

I heard a rumour and it may not be true that Hawks are eyeing off Roberton.
Now they could be clearing some serious space with Gibson, Burgoyne and Hodge at the end to name the main 3.
Now if they throw a whole lot of money at Roberton you can be as clever as you like, a 25 year old with 3 kids in a ruthless collision sport like AFL footy where you can be today's front page & tomorrow's toilet paper will affect negotiations, its as simple as that.
A 25 year old, 194 cm Defender in near AA form does not fall off trees, so you have to remunerate him well.
Problem is if you have too many of these thats when you cop the squeeze and run into trouble like we did in 2012-13.

.
They can eye him off all they like, he is not a free agent.

St Kilda Saints
Sean Dempster (unrestricted)
Sam Gilbert (unrestricted)
Leigh Montagna (unrestricted)
Nick Riewoldt (unrestricted)

Note:
UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

Primary List

Players delisted by a club are unrestricted free agents but a player who retires or delists himself is not eligible to be a free agent.

Players who are not in the top 25 per cent of salaries at their club (that is, in the club’s top nine-10 paid players) are eligible for unrestricted free agency if they have served at least eight years with the club.

Roberton is only in his fifth year at St Kilda.

So unless the Hawks finish 18th they could only gain him by trade, and they do not have a lot to trade.

If Robbo keeps up his current year then he will deservedly gain pay rise.

I am also not sure that Robbo would want to again join a club at the start of their rebuild which is where the Hawks are at present. They are no longer a "Destination Club" for players from lower rank clubs who want to play finals.

Robertson is a local Frankston boy who wanted moved back to Melbourne from freo to come back home and raise his family. St kilda gave him that option. He is in the leadership group now, I doubt he would leave st kilda unless a significant offer was made

As for the other 3, I doubt very much interest would be coming from other clubs with big offers, and even then, they would have to trade

Hawthorn have been quite generous lately, so they can have Roberton if they give us two first rounders and Cyril.

To be a great team you need to be elite on and off the field.
If we want to be a great team we need to get deals like Roberton done.
He will sign.

We'll give them Savage for Cyril. Time to keep bending those dorks over!

We would be mad to let Roberton go. As for Billings, he has the rest of the year to improve. Plenty of time, if he doesn't, time to go.

There was nothing wrong with the way Billings played against Hawthorn.
I thought he played very well and was a good tam player.

Billings ain't Bont - we need to accept that and admit we got that wrong
IMO at best he's another Luke Ball..... ie good player but not elite like Judd/Hodge who were taken either side of him and we got that wrong too...

If Roberton keeps playing the way he has in 2017...then he needs to be paid accordingly. He is borderline elite at the moment.

Webster and Sinclair are keepers. To be honest, both could attract some interest from other clubs to fill list holes.

Billings... To be honest I am not really sure of his currency. High pick that is yet to deliver. No way would we eek a first rounder. I cant even see a second rounder changing hands in terms of any trade. Could be bundled however.... especially for one of the big fish names floating around.

Billings will be a very good player -we would be silly to consider trading him.

Well that remains to be seen.

We would also be silly to carry him.

Billings is a gun, simple as that. Only a lunatic would let him go.
