Our worst start to a season this Century

One win and a draw after 9 rounds.

Dismal Dismal Dismal.
Why? Why? Why?

Because we have no talent
And a coach that is WAY out of his depth.
It’s really quite simple.
And disturbing.

Shows what a champion Nick Reiwoldt was....must have been carrying this group to some half decent results for last couple of years allowing Bruce and Membrey to get multiple bags by exhausting opposition defence and helping the backline with relief marks on the wing countless times.
Not to mention on field leadership and someone the team did not want to let down.
To me...when all is said and done...we have lowered our standard of what is acceptable.
That is something that Rooey and to a certain extent Joey and certainly BJ would never just let happen.

Lot of truth in this. I think the loss of Roo and to a lesser extent Joey has been underestimated substantially. Even later in the year last year he was still running around presenting, and this year we virtually have had a different and not as mobile type of player, ie Paddy trying to be the big guy in the forward line - no Bruce, who despite his foibles is quite mobile like Roo, and virtually no Membrey, who is only coming good now, except for his right boot. I think Paddy was doing quite a good job in a malfunctioning forward line. A lot of adjusting is required with the new setup, and it takes time.

Of course, conversion is the main issue - if we had converted even to a reasonable extent, it lifts confidence, our results would have been better. The last couple of weeks has shown improvement, and if we can get a forward line back and kick straighter we will win a few.

Quite a few positives in the season:

Hunter & Coffield are keepers
Ed Phillips looks a keeper
Bailey Rice looked Ok (granted one game only but he has poise)
Gresh is coming back
Steven back to best, almost
Webster is a gun attacking back
Dunstan has been excellent
Hick has improved and is certainly giving 100% - hopefully will improve further
Carlisle has been a consistent intercept back - leave him there
Kicking for goal can't get any worse
Freeman is injured but it is not his hamstring
Top 3 draft pick - speedy mid?
etc etc

It is not the end of the world

Sorry mate, but season 2000 was WAY worse: after 9 rounds ZERO wins. One draw. Our first ( of TWO ) win of that season came in round 11 ( V Port Adelaide) THAT was the season from hell!

Technically the year 2000 was still last century, the new century started in 2001 :)

Oh Jiggster, I say since you've come this far there's no point in quitting on the club. I've decided to go down with the ship, should we sink. I'll be there to keep the captain company, if need be. Having said that, if you're simply not enjoying going to the footy you can take some respite from going for the remainder of the season. There's no shame in doing that. It's not like we haven't already witnessed enough losing over the years. I'm hoping that by the end of the season we'll be able to start afresh with new plans, new recruits (players and/or staff) that will help inject some much needed optimism around the club.

Gee we are going bad. A couple of weeks ago you were all fire and brimstone about how you were very emotional about the club. Now not renewing membership??

For mine - I will ALWAYS renew my membership until they cease to exist (which hopefully will never happen) but I will reserve my right to miss games. In 09/10 my excuse was,'sorry the footy's on that night, I can't make it.' I frantically made roster changes at work so I wouldn't miss a game. I'd be lying if I said I displayed that sort of passion this year. Took the whole family along Saturday night, hoping for a decent showing. Even brought a couple of guests. Found myself shitty as anything. It's not good for my mental health.

At least with 2000 we saw it coming.
The 2018 debacle has (for me) been entirely unforseen.

(And yes, any numerate person will confirm that the year 2000 was the last year of the 20th century).

Nailed it.

I was hoping for a top 8 finish this year but at worst thought maybe 9th/10th similar to last year. We are miles off that now and if Lethlean’s review doesn’t deliver us a Dynamic footy department at the end of season how the hell can we turn this train wreck around quickly?

If we can’t get FA’s in at the end of season we will need to recruit a few rejects from other clubs to change the structure of our team. To make all that work would obviously require a new coach also.

“Not renewing membership” ? Perhaps I should have been a wee bit clearer in my post: If you read what I wrote, you’ll see that I’m “weighing up my options” on membership renewal. At present I have a membership for all Victorian games, Reserved seat, and Social Club. It represents a fair chunk of money ( I’m turned 73 and retired) and for the quality of performances being dished up,I think it’s more than reasonable for me to consider dropping off some parts of my membership package.

In hindsight of 2000, I was anticipating a lot more than finishing dead last. I think my expectations were much the same as before the start of this season. In 2000 we had some decent players on our list: Harvey, Burke, Loewe, Wakelin Bros, Hall, Everitt, Thompson, Hudghton, Jones, Peckett and of course a rookie called Hayes. I don't think many predicted this would be a wooden spoon team before the start of the year.

1999 and last year seemed to have some similar slip ups; and 2000 and this year are similar in we've suddenly gone crashing down to the cellar. They're proving to be very similar train-wreck years.

Wikipedia:
In general usage, centuries are aligned with decades by grouping years based on their shared digits. In this model, the 'n' -th century started/will start on the year (100 x n) - 100 and ends in (100 x n) - 1. For example, the 20th century is generally regarded as from 1900 to 1999, inclusive. This is sometimes known as the odometer effect. The astronomical year numbering and ISO 8601 systems both contain a year zero, so the first century begins with the year zero, rather than the year one.[3] In this model, the hundreds portion of the date is one less than the number of the century, so that all years of the form 18XX are in the 19th century.

In the late 1990s, there was a dispute to whether the 21st century would begin on January 1, 2000, or January 1, 2001. Most people considered the 1999-2000 celebrations to be the start of the 21st century, with fewer people marking the 2000-2001 celebrations as the starting point.

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

So did you celebrate your 21st birthday at the beginning of your 21st year or did you wait till the end of your 21st year?

Presuming it was the latter, then would you not celebrate the end of a century at the end of the 100th year?

Or to put it another way it takes 101 telegraph poles to hold up 100 lengths of cable.

So the 20th century ends at the end of the 2,000th year.
If you celebrate it at the end of the 1,999th year then you are one piece of cable short!

Let's all party like it's 1999 ....
Then agree we have had two equally totally s*** starts to the season in 20 freakin' years!
The difference being that in 2000 we had some great players!
Not sure which coach is worse though.
