Re: Nicky Winmar
I proudly display at home a framed Saints jumper ( circa 1991) signed by Nicky. Bought it at a charity auction - took one look at it and yep, straight to the pool room !
"Winmar to Lockett " are three words that evoke happy memories of the last 6 years at Moorabbin (87 to 92). Nicky - such a beautiful, beautiful footballer.

Imagine him playing in roo's era .
He would have had 100-200 more goals and probably knees in better shape than when he finished.

Re: Nicky Winmar
It was a fascinating interview.
Nicky has had to overcome so much in his life but despite all the abuse he copped he still has a smile and doesn't seem to carry any ill will.
A legend and a champion bloke - I do hope his health holds up.
Would love to see StK get him more involved at major functions.
We should name one of our minor B&F medals after him.

Re: Nicky Winmar
Enrico - there is a bronze statue of Nicky commissioned to be erected outside the new Perth Stadium. So his courageous stance is being reconized here in WA. I think it is not far away from being completed.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Thu 05 Jul 2018 1:22am It was a fascinating interview.

It sticks in my Craw that he hasn’t been inducted in the AFL Hall of Fame as yet and that thug Barry Hall has been.

Good fella Nicky. Great player too.
Still need to convince him to help reverse the bone curse placed on the Saints many years back.

He was quick, strong, aggressive, loved to tackle and tackle hard.
And of course he had those sublime skills, big leap, great set of hands, used both sides and booming accurate kick.
He would thrive in the modern game.

Played with Nicky in 2000 in a premiership fantastic year on and off the field.
His StKilda Team of the Century framed jumper sits proudly in my place of employment and all his trophies safely stored in my downstairs room.

Re: Nicky Winmar
It was interesting to hear him mention Kevin Sheedy went and saw him but he didn't follow through,
then he ended up at StKilda...lucky for us.
The other thing was he won the best & fairest in the local senior team at 15.

Sensational player and great guy. It was great to see him take Julia Zemiro to where he grew up outside of Pingelly. By many people's standards he started with nothing, except for very supportive parents and other great relationships.

Re: Nicky Winmar
That was a great watch!
He is a really humble bloke. He wouldn’t say he was the best player amongst his mates and I thought it poignant that he said he won the ‘Fairest and Best’ rather than the other way around. Most people I know love to mention their B&F’s.
But I’ll say if for you Nicky.
You were the best player amongst your mates. I’m sure because you were one of the greatest players ever to grace our game.
You have been an inspiration to me and so many or us.
You are a bloody legend.

Re: Nicky Winmar
I somewhat agree however, at club level - I think the greater tragedy is that successive Administrations have been completely inept in successfully lobbying the AFL and HoF Committee that Trevor Barker would be a deserved inductee.

Re: Nicky Winmar
It is a travesty that Barker hasn’t been inducted.
Personally, I believe Winmar should go in before Barks.
Whilst Barker was a great player and legendary clubman, I think Winmar’s historic career should be honoured.
Just being the first indigenous player to play 200 games should not be understated. Massive achievement.

that is amazing.. Winmar a far better player than Hall.
Winmar played 250 games after having played 90 games for South Freo, where he was already a star.
Would have been a 340 gamer in this day and age..
Hall was ok but not in the same class.
and that is not even considering the other parts that should make a hall of famer, where Winmar is right up there in AFL history for his gesture and was generally a great ambassador of the game

Re: Nicky Winmar
Walking thru the Moorabbin gates, carrying his small children with a bag carrying his gear
“Gidday Cuz”
Everyone was “Cuz”
A legend of a bloke - and he had some challenges in his personal life whilst at St Kilda
Then 1997, that he played was a testament to his commitment to team
Imagine “Cuz” free of mind plus Everitt and Lazar

Re: Nicky Winmar
I remember in late ‘89 when we were down some key forwards. Winmar went to full full forward for a couple of games.
Kicked a lazy 8 and 9.
Then I remember him playing off half back in 92. That’s when he took the only screamer I have ever seen running backwards and sideways.
He could play anywhere and do anything.

It should be either at Moorabbin where he stamped himself as a legend, or at South Freo where he started out and still regards as "home".
Agree on your Big Bonkas Bogan Barry comment.
But just can't get my head the other debate in this thread around trying to choose between Barks and Elvis.
It just has to be BOTH!

Re: Nicky Winmar
Yes, I remember that well. It was during the last month of the home and away season and the Doc's coaching tenure. The 8 came against Carlton in a 1 point heartbreaker at Princess Park and a week later at the MCG with the 9 goal haul against a pretty good Melbourne team at that time.
