Barks

Post: # 1796470Post seano1 »

Heard Terry Wallace on SEN today suggesting that Barks would be a great inductee into the AFL legends tonight and i for one couldn’t agree more , as he stated the saints weren’t traveling well but this guy played in just about every possie and brought the crowd into see him . And i for one loved watching him leap from a standing start to take those screamers

Don't forget Shane Grambeau either! (or Tim Pekin for that matter.)

One thing against Barks is the relative lack of awards. B&F 'only' twice. So they can't reel out the platitudes as easily. Of course, we know how he is like bone matter, spine in our soul as Saints supporters, but I wonder how many fans of other clubs know our B&F is named so.

I never forget the game he played right at the end of his career...forced to stand the danger hulk Brian Taylor in the absence of a suspended Spud. Didn't stand a chance but still reached up for a specy during our drubbing. Sole highlight in another Victoria Park disaster.

I hope he gets it of course. Come on Barks.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Barks

Post: # 1796545Post SemperFidelis »

I happened to turn onto the broadcast just as Harvs walked out on stage to announce the next inductee, and you just knew it was Barks.

Spud shedding a tear with Bevo over his inclusiveness as a captain was one thing, but his former manager talking about how much he meant to entire generations of Saints supporters had the tears rolling down my face.

Mrs Barks coming out to accept the certificate was a delight - I wasn’t sure she was still with us. She was so so proud.

So happy our own legend has finally been recognised for what he truly was - an inspiration to so many of us at a time when there was not a whole lot to be inspired about.

Fortius quo fidelis. He utterly embodied it.

Another brilliant piece, this one by Greg Baum for the Age

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/hal ... 51uho.html

“The clouds were beginning to gather over St Kilda in 1975, but there was if not a silver lining, a couple of golden threads. There nearly always is at St Kilda. Two from this time were Trevor Barker and Mick Malthouse, who were both inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night.

Barker in so many ways embodied the Saints. He was a thrilling footballer, a flaxen-haired long-sleeved high-flier who time and time again erupted out of the Moorabbin mud to take mark-of-the-week. To photographers, he was a gift. His athleticism was manifest, his courage too; in those less scrupulous days, to hurl yourself into packs the way he did was to invite an unmentionable hereafter. Less feted except by teammates was Barker’s own fierce attack on man and ball.

Barker loved the Saints, and they loved him back, and it was until death did they part. He captained the club, represented it in state games, flew its flag in all forums and in due course was invested as a legend there and lent his name to the best-and-fairest trophy. But he could not subvert its destiny. In a 15-year, 230-game career, he did not play in a single final. Instead there were seven wooden spoons.

Barker must have had opportunities to abscond, but did not, could not, would not. St Kilda ran through him like the Nepean Highway. He came from Cheltenham and when he was done went to Sandringham to coach, and at last to win premierships in 1992 and 1994. But within 18 months, he was dead, of colon cancer. He was just 39...”
