Wylie Buzza

Post: # 1827057Post CQ SAINT »

Has some good qualities. 23yr old, 199cm, 102 kg, accurate booming left foot, strong marking, versatile key forward in a Cats list with quite a few talls. Big strong lad.
Out of contract at the Cats, looking for opportunities and was knocking on the door for selection this year until.a couple of injury setbacks slowed his progress but he finished the year well with 12 goals in his last 5 matches including 3/7 in a losing final
32 goals from 17 games in the VFL. Definitely worth a look.

Haven't seen him play at all.
Was not highly rated in QLD as a junior with a lot surprised he was drafted to Geelong, but as you point out he is big and supposedly athletic and a good mover.

You'd think if he was decent one of the QLD clubs would grab his as a DFA.

You'd think there would be worse options you could throw a life line to than Buzza.

He was a late starter Joffa. Had only played 80 games of football when he went to the draft. Has come a long way in 3 seasons of VFL and showed enough to be get a debut in 17. 3rd behind Ratagulea and Hawkins is not a bad place to look.

He has a simple approach to the game, uses his strength and positioning well, has a decent lead, strong hands and above average accuracy. He converts his chances when he gets them from as far as 55 out. He has played against men for a few years and is consistently kicking goals when fit.

I'm not saying he is going to be a gun but he has showed the same type of commitment to development that Marshall has and he comes from an elite program.

Would be cheap and I'm sure a chat to Geelong would see him delisted or he would make an ideal rookie when you consider our shortage of 'power' forwards.

Thanks CQ, sounds like he's worth a rookie shot to me.

There is a reason why Geelong are happy to let him go. We are like the lost dogs home.

No interest in picking up discards from other clubs who cannot get a game

and that's the bottom line

Bruce, Membrey and Steele said to say hello.
Wilkie, Marshall and Parker said they believe in you.

Roberton rang to find out why as a delisted free agent he missed your list!

Bruce Roberton, Steele played AFL before we picked them up... they were no duds, just looking for a new home.

Buzza was not behind Hawkins and Sav, because when Hawkins was out, he didn’t come in, or was he an emergency.

He is barely a good vfl player

Who on earth would we want him when we’re already getting Ryder as a backup ruck to Marshall?!

He found it difficult breaking into the minor premiers team who had a % of 135, with Hawkins, Ratugalea, Stanley and Taylor all playing forward at times due to injury, balance and experience, but he has recorded 9 games so far.
He had a good year in the VFL averaging 1.8goals, 12d, 5 marks and featured in the best players as a key forward 10/17 matches and his team played finals.
Now this is hardly ground breaking but the caveat is, he has never played a full season of senior football, was discovered as an athlete with potential from country Queensland as a novice teenager and is yet to play 150 games of the sport.
My point is that, that kind of output from a 23 year old, all of a sudden, is a fair indicator of some talent and the projectory from here is more than likely up.
As a replacement for McCartin, is there anything to lose?

If he is any good, Geelong will want to keep him as Hawkins is 31, if they let him go, you’d know he is not in their plans or much chop.

Those numbers for an AFL listed Key Forward in the VFL are average at best.

I've liked what I've seen of him. Big lump of a lad who could be a handy pickup if we get him cheaply...happy to take him as steak knives in the Steven deal :D

We actually need quality players... not steak knives and cast offs...

Players like Buzza, Sam Gray and Masten will actually make us a worse team.

If he could learn how to handball he looks like he could be a pretty good understudy to Ryder as Marshalls wingman for ruck/forward
