So what was it with Brandon White?

Post: # 1830902Post skeptic »

The silence surrounding his not getting played became deafening which led to many ppl like myself overstating his value/form... that in turn led led to some being over critical. On and on it went.

But it’s over now, dusted.

So what was it that stopped him from getting opportunity

Obviously there was an attitudinal issue

Party boy
Bad work rate
Secret instances of bad behaviour

Anyone got a clue

Has there been any whisper that the delisting was so that he could be transferred to the rookie list?

Remember watching him one game trying to chase an opponent down and it wasn't good - seemingly just couldn't run out the game

Classic case of good at VFL but was neither fast or fit enough for AFL

If he was deemed up to AFL standard another club will look at him as a rookie. If not, it is safe to say he is not considered good enough.

Without any specific examples, my guess is it was dislike for Richo as much as anything else that created all the angst and mystery around White. Cognitive dissonance dictated that if Richo is completely incompetent, White not getting games means he has to have been a gun.

Reminds me off Leigh Fisher. All the right tricks on the surface of it, and highly regarded talent-wise, but of no particular value.

IIRC, it was similar to Jamie Cripps.
Cripps' one, he said the injury usually happened to skiers?
Maybe severe hyperextension when travelling at high speed?

It may be true that he wasn't good enough but it's still baffling he wasn't given more opportunity when you consider.

1. He never played a bad game in the seniors
2. His performance at VFL level was better than those around him who were getting senior games.

So many like him before, peaked somewhere just either side of the line between VFL and AFL standard.

Brandon White came and left a good VFL standard player. He never really came on, played from within his natural talents and from all appearances and repute, never really grasped the notion of professionalism. In his first couple of preseasons he went backwards in fitness and application, it was only his potential that kept him there as long as he was. Shame really.

Ironically Richo become a lightening rod for misguided frustration that was somehow sparking from Brandon White and his inability to grab his opportunity. Weirdly enough the sparks seem to grow larger and fire more rapidly as the frustration with Richo and his coaching grew. And it grew to the point that it then become internet myth that not only was Richo to blame for not turning Brandon into a star, but somehow Brandon was also the answer to our teams fortunes turning around.

I think it’s more about who was played instead.
Weller got a lot of chances in 2017 despite mediocre form and a few of White’s performances surpassed that. He certainly showed more in his one game forward injured than Weller did over a lot of his significantly greater opportunities

Same deal with Newnes at times in the middle.

I think the argument has changed with the frustration of not playing White met with the response to that frustration.

As one of the bigger critics of how this all played out... the criticism is not that White was a genuine star that should have played unconditionally but rather that based on exposed form, he deserved more opportunity.

Personally, I tend to lean to the BM way of thinking that White pbly didn’t work hard enough and that’s why he didn’t get more chances. On exposed form however, he showed promise... surely even the harshest critic has to grant him that.

Therefore, rather than play ppl that aren’t producing, it simply makes more sense granted him more opportunity when form warranted with the hope that that maybe that could lead to a change in attitude

That’s the one I was thinking off.

Anyway, just another shambolic draft. Gresham was a good pick - a player who had slid due to height as he was originally rated in top 10.

Picks after White included:-
Blake Hardwick
Bailey Williams
Tom Phillips
Mitch Brown
Sam Menegola
Michael Hartley
Nathan Broad

plus a host of others who are fringe players.

Later picks can be a hit or a miss, but I struggle to think of many late picks that did much in Trout’s reign. Others still had a bit of a score.

Happy to be corrected but I can only think of three late picks in In the 2011-2017 period when he was in charge.

1. Sinclair... might not get a renewal
2. Marshall... drafted as a forward, where he is average, just turned out to be an amazing ruckman.
3. Webster

That’s it. For seven years of drafting, Trout got:-

Best 22:-
Billings
Marshall
Gresham
Webster
Battle
Clark
Coffield

Fringe:-
Dunstan
Acres
Lonie
Sinclair
Newnes
Long
