Pies headline NAB Cup Super Saturday Michael Warner From: Herald Sun October 26, 2010 10:55AM

"SUPER Saturday" featuring lightning matches between Richmond, Carlton and Collingwood headlines the first week of next year's NAB Cup.
The league has shaken up the format for next year’s pre-season competition, with six three-team groups playing a mini-premiership of three matches, each of two 20-minute halves, at the same venue, one after the other.

The winner of each group, plus the two next best performing teams, will take part in a normal round two of the pre-season competition.

The Tigers, Blues and Magpies face off at Etihad Stadium from 7.15pm on Saturday, February 12.

The competition kicks off with matches between Adelaide, Melbourne and Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday, February 11.

The biggest loser is Hawthorn, which must travel to take on Fremantle and West Coast in Perth on Sunday, February 12.

As revealed last week, Geelong, North Melbourne and the Bulldogs meet at Skilled Stadium on Sunday, February 20 at 4.15pm.

ROUND 1 MATCHES
- Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Melbourne at AAMI Stadium, February 11 (Friday night)
- Collingwood, Carlton and Richmond at Etihad Stadium, February 12 (Saturday night)
- West Coast, Fremantle and Hawthorn at Patersons Stadium (Subiaco Oval), February 13 (Sunday afternoon)
- Essendon, the Brisbane Lions and St Kilda at Etihad Stadium, February 18 (Friday night)
- Greater Western Sydney, Sydney Swans and Gold Coast at Blacktown Olympic Park, February 19 (Saturday night)
- Geelong, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs at Skilled Stadium, February 20 (Sunday afternoon)

They'll be fresh, so we'll take the Brisbane game and head off to the bush for the remaining three games of the pre-season...

Hmmm... looks like a bit of a Mickey Mouse arrangement. Didn't the AFL have a similar round robin type of deal in 1996 to celebrate it's centenary?

1996 Lightning Premiership was simply knockout.

Interesting to see Fox getting so much of the early week's games, but they'll probably lose a semi final because of it.

Here's a random bit of trivia about the Lightnight Premiership of 1996 - Matthew Young played in an opposition Hawthorn side. Then when the main pre-season comp started (was it the Ansett Cup then?), he played in a wining St.Kilda team.

For the record, who actually won that Lightning Premiership?

50,000 richmond, carlton and collingwood fans in the one area now that's entertainment. i might go along as a ring judge.

This is a good idea by the AFL.

Might make it worth while going to NAB cup night if you get to see three games in one night.

I went to the rugby super 7's at the Comm Games in 2006 at the Dome, and it was brilliant watching so many games, albeit shorter games.

They should also consider 15 players on the field not 18 at any one time to open it up a bit more.

i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

It appears that Essendon get the break between games so we will play 2 in a row which IMO is the better way to go, maybe not for winning but for less injuries which is by far and away the most important thing in these silly games.

Hopefully last year of NAB cup and we can somehow try to fit 24 games in for the following season. May not be possible though because of ground availabilty and obviously the need for at least one week of rst.

OMG, I had not thought of that, I reckon that would be great to go!

I think I like this new fresh idea the AFL has come up with, can't say I agree with them much over the years but I think it will make it more interesting to watch.

Geez that's a long season! The AFL seems to start earlier every year.
Preseason cup used to start last the weekend in Feb, now it's two weeks earlier.
Not doubt it's all about the $$$'s and encroaching on other sports seasons. $A$F$L$
