F50 tackles vs Collingwood - where we need to improve most !

In GF2 Collingwood had a massive 36 tackles in their forward 50.
We had a paltry 11 .

As a result Thomas, Shaw,O'Brien and Johnson etc.. rebounded with ease and proved very damaging players.

Given McQualter was probably our best F50 tackler last year (he looked most likely to lay a tackle whenever he was in our F50)... we need to really try to somehow improve in this area.

This is the area we can get the most improvement from.

We will probably have less inside 50'entries than the top 3 sides - we need to at least try to hold the ball in there when it does enter.

We probably need someone new , with more leg speed up forward !
Roo can't be our only quick player in the F50.

You're right samoht.

This is more or less the game breaker. If we can match them in this facet we'll come close.

Interesting to note Collingwoods opponents the last few weeks have put them under very little forward pressure, following is their opponents inside 50 tackles over the past month.

Carlton 1
Port 7
Dons 2
Suns 1

I guess when you look at the inside 50 differentials, some teams probably haven't had much opportunity to apply pressure.

However, if the midfield can compete, and we can lock it inside 50....I think you have a point, it may perhaps rattle them a bit given they've so easily had their way for awhile now.

It may not only be about the will to tackle and chase .. you do need the leg speed too.

Maybe our forward line needs to introduce another quick player in there ?

the Carlton stat though is a surprise .. they do have a couple of quick small forwards .. so maybe they didn't work hard enough or were brushed aside ?

That's good work with the stats SainterK .. it highlights an area we need to improve in .. the selection committee should be choosing our forward 6 with that important stat in mind too... and not be afraid to make a change in personnel or retweak if needs be until we get it right.

Perhaps kicking the ball deeper into our 50 will put more players around any loose ball and more pressure on getting it out.

Poorly placed kicks/passes to the HF line will only see the ball quickly re-bound. At the end of the day, it's about good delivery

Goddard has to start in the centre IMO, gives us the best chance of delivering deep and putting pressure on Pies backs. Can have him languishing down back for this game (he usually doesn't against Collingwood anyway).

BJ isnt a clearance player though. Jack and Dal are our best clearance players and they should give it to BJ coming off HB where he clearly plays his best footy.

I agree re: Goddards clearances and HB drive, but I wouldn't either Jack or NDS not to start in the centre also. Armo mid and Steven forward?
