Draft Prospects - Hand size

Post: # 1178770Post Con Gorozidis »

This sounds very simple and some people will probably call me an idiot. But do they measure hand size/finger span at draft camps?
I have noticed a good hand span really does help players with ball handling/marking. I have noticed a lot of AFL players - even little guys have a good hand span.

Apparently it equates to other lengths as well. Dal santo must have little hands and still uses it well.

Rather than measure their hands to see how well they can handle the ball they might try watching them play to see how well they can handle the ball.

But it will be easier for them to see how they handle the ball if they have big hands to watch

This test has been copied from the NFL in the USA. Large hand size correlates with fewer ball handling errors, fumbles and dropped passes. Correlation only though, not cause and effect, hence the exceptions. In favour of the theory, think Stewart Loewe. Another great mark, Rex Hunt, has hands the size of rain tanks.

I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

ok so why bother with the draft camp then? just scrap it.
obviously they run the draft camp because it is not practical for every junior game in the country to be watched.
it also provides opportunties for clubs with less $$ to get access to players. without the camp (and testing) then more financial and resourced clubs would hold a significant advantage.
so my hand test ios not as dumb as u seem to think.

Whilst hand size may enable you to hold the ball a little better or give you more ball contact as you mark, I don't see it as a crucial physical attribute to the afl footballer.

There are other ways to improve your ball handling skills. I think it is a small indicator that would not sway a potential recruiter. Would you really choose one guy over another because of the size of his hands? Therefore is it worth measuring? Maybe just to serve the people who state "geez look at the size of his hands, I wonder how big they are."

Maybe this explains all the photos sam gilbert took ? He was just doing research for our recruitment staff ?
