Lenny is magnificent and that tackle was ridiculous.

There was a period of around 10 mins in the 3rd Q where he was everywhere... at the bottom of packs, clearing out of stoppages, and of course that tackle. I wasn't sure that we'd see quite the same Lenny after this injury. He's had two ACL repairs remember.

Absolutely incredible.

hard to argue with this. gotta love the bloke.

he's currently averaging 7.7 tackles a game - though good to see that armo's averaging 8.7!

Is a legend now.

True legend's do not need a piece of paper, or official announcement, to decree them a legend....you just know.

Lenny is already a legend of the Saints.

Welcome back, Lenny

WHEN Lenny Hayes had a knee reconstruction about this time last year, St Kilda people may not have said it, but the thought bubble that formed instantly was almost universal: That's our season.

Given that Hayes is 32, isn't quick and has played the game in a manner that invites bruising, it was not unreasonable to wonder if he would suit up for the Saints again.

But Hayes has never let the limitations of his body restrict what he can do on the football field. Last night, the veteran played like a 26-year-old, while Bulldog Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney, who is a relative pup at 26, moved like a banged up player of Lenny's vintage. Cooney's struggles brought to mind Paul Keating's description of old-fashioned Tony Abbott, a "young fogey".

The term "spiritual leader" is overused in football, but it's entirely justified when describing the effect that Hayes has on the Saints. Last night, the decibels reached heavy metal levels — loudest of the night — when Hayes nailed Easton Wood in a forceful tackle that forced an unexpected turnover, allowing Jack Steven to snap an impressive goal.

If you want a snapshot of why the Saints smashed the Dogs into tiny pieces last night, consider this change in off-season personnel for the respective clubs. St Kilda: In Hayes. Bulldogs: Out Barry Hall.

Lenny Hayes has answers to tame Bulldogs

April 14, 201211:28PM

ST KILDA destroyed the Western Bulldogs in the second half to win their AFL match by 63 points at Etihad Stadium tonight.

Saints onballer Lenny Hayes starred with 30 possessions, seven clearances and a superb third-quarter tackle as his team won 15.13 (103) to 5.10 (40).

The Bulldogs kicked the last three goals of the game to avoid some unwanted history.

The Bulldogs player even tried the old "don't argue". Lenny has done a few brilliant tackles like this over the journey. Let's hope he has a few more up his sleeve. Just so enjoyable watching him play.

The 1998 Coca-Cola AFL National Draft was held on 1 November 1998.
Round Pick Player Recruited from Club
1 1 Des Headland Subiaco Football Club Brisbane Lions
1 2 Justin Longmuir West Perth Football Club Fremantle
1 3 Nic Fosdike Norwood Football Club Sydney Swans
1 4 Ryan Fitzgerald South Adelaide Football Club Sydney Swans
1 5 Michael Stevens Murray Bushrangers Port Adelaide
1 6 Murray Vance Murray Bushrangers Carlton
1 7 Josh Carr East Fremantle Football Club Port Adelaide
1 8 Jude Bolton Calder Cannons Sydney Swans
1 9 Mark McVeigh NSW/ACT Rams Essendon
1 10 Brandon Hill Peel Thunder Football Club West Coast Eagles

there was some talk of us taking Jude Bolton being our choice and Sydney took him first unexpectedly and Lenny being their most likely target. Good for both in the end but better for us.

Check out the look of adoration on Milne's face. Priceless.

Lenny was at the Membership Day at Moorabbin and when he came out onto the ground he turned into the Pied Piper with the number of people who walked in his wake.
