Gilbo down back

Post: # 1291342Post Con Gorozidis »

Look I know he struggles in the one on one marking contests and the wrestles... but given we now have Roberton, Dunnel, Siposs (and Ferg) capable of playing the running meduim-tall defender role - maybe its time Gilbo played the more manly role and some bigger folks? Could he work on his strength and focus less on his running ?

So you want to play a gut you say struggles in one on one contests in one on one contests. Yep sounds good. I know CJ struggles with his kicking but why dont we play him the BJ role this season.

50% of the time.

But seriously the guy is 194cm and 28 years old. He is a big boy now. You cant play the loose man down back role forever. It seems the Saints are full of players who want that loose man in defense role which is relatively easy (I stress relatively) . Rather than try to recruit someone who doesn't exist - Someone has to man the f* up. Gilbo or Fisher are meant to be well paid senior players.
How many 'creative backs' can one side have? We have dozens. I think it is a great role for younger players - Roberton, Siposs, Webster, Ferguson, Geary, Dunnel, Newnes..... But once you hit 25 you need to man up. Someone will say oh look at Hodgey - but he is only 185cm - and he always goes in to the midfield or even fwd when the side needs him.

Just imagine at training like in the under 10s.

Coach Q: Who wants to play loose man in defence and doesnt have to play on anyone but can run it out of defence?
12 hands go straight up!

Coach Q: Who wants to play on a opposition good big player who can win the game for them?
Noone stirs except to stare down at shuffling toes. Awkward silence.

I might be mistaken but I always thought Gilbert's role on the HBF was to beat his opponent and if the chance arose for him to then run forward and break the lines (Gram similarly).
I didn't think he played the 'loose man' all that much.
Maybe at times the opposition caused him to be the 'loose man' because THEY preferred him to be it rather than Goddard or Fisher, but I don't believe we actually set up that way.
My recollection is also that often he would leave his opponent and help out others by being the 'third man' at the contest, especially in spoiling.

But maybe I was watching a different game?

Saints and Sam should have parted ways a couple of years back. We may have been able to keep one or two others who I'd prefer. We know who they are.

Totally agree. I cant remember him ever really being the loose man. I think people think because he runs with the ball he is loose.

Gilbo's the last bloke I'd play in the loose man or quarterback role. His kicking is nowhere near good enough. Misses the target far too often.

Yeah play him on the gorillas, they'd love that.

As for under tens, most would prefer to play key position, you obviously don't watch much junior footy.

Looking forward to his 28th birthday Con, in August 2014...

Apparently he's not far past 26, but don't let that get in the way...

I've never seen Gilbo used as the loose man.

Ok ok. Points taken! I guess what I am trying to say is - yes we have 6 backs who all take a player and try and beat them every week. But we dont have anyone who plays on opposition guns. Do we obsess on trying to recruit someone who probably doesnt exist? Do you try and train up a kid which takes years or does one of your senior older matured body guys try and step it up? I think it is a legitimate discussion. We seem to have a lot of players who can play Gilbos role and Gilbo is the tallest of them all hence I picked on him.

And BS - you are right. I can honestly say I havent seen a junior footy match since I played in them myself.
I assume you have kids otherwise why on earth would i watch junior footy?

Gilbert is a major disappointment.
When I look at our backline he might very well miss out.

Geary Wilkes Gwilt
Dempster Fisher Roberton

with Siposs drifting back to play the extra defender.

surely Simpkin gets the go at full back over Wilkes long term and short term i think its better for our side to have him there Beau is a back up for injurys in the key forward or key back roles not a starting fb

Gilbo major disappointment?

Sure his kicking is not always good, mixed in with some great passes, but he has many good aspects to his play. I would be very surprised if he is not in our 22.
Just turned 26 with 131 games, he will be in his prime.

I've heard that the club has provided Gilbo a revolutionary program designed to improve his kicking so that he can replace Goddard.

Can't see where I have Gwilt and Sam missing out.
Just have a feeling that Wilkes might make the grade as a defender with another pre-season under his belt.' Would like to have Simpkin in the side - rate him highly.
Thought a couple of years ago that Gilbert might be a 'gun' but now think he is fairly average.
