Watters is a good coach give him time

Post: # 1316588Post big_mac_evoy5 »

Can't believe some people are doubting his coaching ability after 18 months and one preseason. I think he need one decent key forward to A. Make a contest and Atleast bring down the ball for our crummers. Which the coach think we have on lee and white so need to give him time.
Our backline looks unsettled I think we will gett better but we do need a few key defenders.
So if we lack quality in those positions it's not his fault he needs to time to build his list and get them playing his system which required a high level of efficiency and our younger players will take time to get there.

It took Ross lyon 3 years with a good list to get results could take us 3-5 years before are a regular in September again!

Thoughts sorry for lack of grammar im on my phone

He has done nothing to prove he is a good coach yet.

Ross coached StK to a prelim in his second season, with albeit a different list.

Watters has got a fair bit of time imo

if we stay around the mark he will be given time if we bottom out compleatly and end up in the bottom 4 then he will be feeling the heat .. he will be allowed to build the team but he will have to do it while keeping us around the 12th to 9th area

His game day, and strategic talent is yet to be seen to be honest....

but from what I have seen, his development model seems pretty consistent.. (albeit mostly based on speculation and hoping)

He knows the business and he has an eye on the non footy stuff. Really happy with how he's going. Baring the first round loss about what I would have expected so far this season. Richmond was a favourite and I was hoping we could steal the win and nearly did. Our defence has been really decimated by injury this season on top of Goddard and Gram out of the side.

We have a very average back 6 and our midfield is not much better, especially when you rate the mid group as all the players that rotate through there in a game.

Good luck Scott, you have a lot of work to do, I hope the academy works.....

We could have got Mick Malthouse or Neeld. He pretty much got around the same result Lyon did in his final year with no full back, no ruck depth and a fast tracking of youth. Promising to rebuild while demanding we remain competitive. All good IMO.

50% win ratio after 24 games.

Ross Lyon's was 54% after 24 games.

Grant Thomas's was 25% after 24 games.

It's very early days, both in his career and the season.

Really? Allan Jeans missed the finals in his second season - with albeit a different list - so I guess Ross is a better coach than Jeansy.

As premierships are what counts at AFL level, we only had one successful coach at St Kilda- Yabby. The rest have been a mixture of good or ordinary.

Totally agree Paddy - I believe his match day coaching is below average, but can improve with the right people assisting him. The list development and media aspect he does well...he is a lot more proficient than Neeld in any event.

Watters has inherited a more problematic list than Lyon.

Lyon was gifted a group of excellent players in their prime, who had been coached very well by Thomas.

Unfair to compare Watters unfavourably with Lyon. One thing in Watters' favour is that he as an eye on the present and an eye on 5 years down the track (as did Thomas). Does anyone think that Lyon had an eye on 5 years down the track?

Yes, give him time. He's been handed a list management hot potato.
