Back into the AFL wilderness

Post: # 1325372Post Sainternist »

After a decade of finally feeling like a force to be reckoned with, it's time to refamilarise ourselves as being one of "the underdogs".

I guess one positive when wins become so rare, is when you actually do win a game you really savour the moment

I just hope it never gets as bad as it did in the Timid Watson era. At least, in the meantime, we are reasonably competetive and not being on the wrong end of royal hidings.

Anyhow, I'm still in for the long haul. Are you?

Yep, I'm here.

I can handle plenty of losses like that one.

As long as we give our all and the kids pop up a bit and show something I'm happy.

I still think 6 wins is realistic and do-able this season.

based on that post Sainternist , I think you should alter your signature...

I'm with the Saints all year, every year....

It's remiss to have high expectations, it only leads to disappointment

Geez this is depressing!!!

Didn't think we'd fall so far so quickly this year, we look a long way off.

Of course I'm still in, it's called an addiction!! The REAL supporters will stick.

At least wins will mean more now, there's always a positive! :D

Agreed. That was as good a performance as I expected. Shame we still depend on the veterans to keep us competitive but a few of the kids did OK.

You are obviously not familiar with the sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm and Larry David's antics.

Actually, I started following the Saints in the early 80's. I just didn't know the meaning of the word "win" back then, hence I rarely felt all that disappointed when we lost. But heck, those days seemed fun in comparison to that dreadful year 2000. At least you could enjoy the Moorabbin atmosphere in the 80's.

I suppose we weren't that flash when it was a 12 team comp a few years ago.
We've done really well over the last ten years and held our own in the national comp.
Would love to pick up another big nick to take us into the next era,
Disappointment yes,wilderness dunno??

I hope not... the club has finally reached a level of strength and respect. I hope we can have a small down time and come back stronger then 09. We can if we can get some recruiting right and some of our young lights keep shining.

When we got home, out Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt."

The bonus is low draft picks. Plenty of others have had a down year, and reloaded. Pies, WC, Adel.....Melb have taken it a bit far. We'll have money in the tin. Go after some in the 23-26 bracket.

Just blood the kids gradually. Play the old fellas for balance, and so we don't get flogged. If we keep that effort up and improve our skills, structure and teamwork it won't be a waste.

Like I've said before, we all knew this day would come after our dreadful recruiting between 2006 and 2010. The right thing is being done. New players are being given important game time and some are showing that they will be players. Accept where we're at and be thankful that we have a coach who saw the writing on the wall and actively moved to do something about it. This is not 2009 and it is not the 80s.

I think most supporters/members can take a year or two of low ladder results if the kids are being played and you can see improvement.

Call me an optimist, but I think we're on the right track in regards to recruiting, blending the young in with the experienced, and given a few early draft picks this year, I reckon we'll be excited again in 18 months time.

Celebrating effort is just plain wrong. These guys are paid a fortune - effort is a given - start celebrating it and we will be a Melbourne in no time

hello.

i will support the sainters no matter what if we drop down this or next year so be it.

I dont think that we are too far off the pace at all. losing gram and Goddard rebound off half back has highlighted important deficiencies we have and left a massive hole as well as missing a monster defender.

Lets be smart this year, finishing 9th to 12th means nothing. finish lower.

I dont expect us to be in the wilderness beyond next year

I'm here, and I agree with wolfpup - the Saints aren't too far off it.
Certainly need a few KPPs.
Wonder what the margin would have been had the game been played at Etihad?

Disagree. The likes of Malthouse, Lyon always bang on about process not about win/loss, and that is what I hope that our coach is doing. At the moment our 'process' is about staying competitive whilst blooding youngsters i.e. a focus on rebuilding and transition. So far, I'm relatively happy with what I'm seeing.
