So how do we beat the Giants?

Post: # 1608564Post bigred »

They pantsed, absolutely pantsed the Power on the weekend.

So how do we beat this AFL designed juggernaut?

Forward line is somewhat.... alarming.

Having watched parts of the Port v GWS game, I couldn't believe the total lack of pressure PA put on the GWS players. There was practically no pressure on the ball carrier, little pressure in marking duels and the GWS didn't even need to run a full pace to link up down the field. If we just run hard, pressure the opposition AND STOP GIFTING GOALS to the opposition with turnovers, then we will have a very good chance of winning.

If we play like we did against the Hawks we are a chance.

If we play like we did against the Dogs we are no chance.

The old "Its won or lost in the middle". Both sides have undersized defences. Ours is old, theirs is inexperienced. Also they are missing a few first choice defenders but so are we. Cameron coming back doesn't help but from memory he usually takes a few games to get going. Mummy is the biggest issue for mine. Hickey has been fantastic but Mummy is a bully and could well rag doll Hickey. Longer may be called on if the coaches are worried but if not, expect a lot of 3rd man up.I think we have more firepower in the middle so if we get first use think we have a great chance.

You can say that again! The AFL's newest monster are starting to flex a muscle. But boy Port were absolute garbage.

The good news is we're at home. Just need to bring the same intensity from the previous two weeks and we're in with a real chance.

Shame it's not at the G. Suits our game plan better than Jihad.

I hope we can be mentally "up" for a third week in a row. A big ask.

Yes, I'm beginning to think we're more suited to playing the MCG. Would love us to play our home games there instead of Jihad. But alas, it looks as though we're stuck in the AFL's homeless shelter for struggling Melbourne-based clubs for (at least) the foreseeable future.

Absolutely huge ask in winning this match on the weekend. If we're going to give them a real contest, it could be a very bruising affair.

Are you kidding about the midfields?

GWS - Greene (career best form), Coniglio, Shiel, Whitfield, Kelly, Ward (simply a gun), Griffen, Palmer and Scully - that is a sensational group

Their backline

Shaw (I watched him closely at the Swans GWS game and his reading of the play is brilliant)
Davis (very underrated)
Nathan Wilson (going to be a very good player)

but the player no one has mentioned who we literally have nobody to play on is Lobb (6ft 9) , athletic , can mark

I have no doubt GWS can play finals this year

Would probably need to look back to our first game against them last year...near identical line-ups, we got very close with Cameron on fire and Roo (under difficult circumstances) injured. They won't find the going as easy as they did against Port at home. I believe we can match their midfield on our own turf, but have to improve on the (sometimes umpire assisted) gift giving turn-overs against the Hawks from which they scored nearly 50 points on the weekend!

They are up and down like a mole's undies

Hopefully they are down... If they get their tails up, look out... If you put them under pressure... They are vulnerable

In a shoot out, they will flog us ... If we grind them, they will crack

How did we lose to Port, our last quarters are a bit of an issue.

Hopefully we can play 4 competitive quarters on Sunday and at least we'll have a chance.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

1) Harder at the ball
2) Move the ball quickly from the backline
3) Pressure, pressure, pressure (especially the likes of Shiel and Ward)
4) Take our chances

The Saints are coming!

They are a hardened side these days so it wont be easy. We will need to be on our game.

Bit harsh - I also read afl.com's breakdown but noted that Sam Mitchell is the 'turnover king' for the Hawks.

When you're in the engine room the chances of turning it over in the heat are higher...hence a lot of gun midfielders appear 'turnover kings'. Similarly, points scored from turnovers villains tend to be defenders. Can read much into stats, except that we are ranked 17th as a club, so there's an obvious area for improvement. I believe the Hawks scored all but one of their goals from turnovers in the first quarter on Saturday, conversely we scored one point.

He gets it more than just about anyone else and the more you do the more likely you are to balls something up. I'll put it another way. The only players who don't make mistakes are the ones that don't do anything

The first three are descriptive (of the Giants)
The last prescriptive of our only chance.

Cameron is the main worry. Really need carlisle or goddard for him but alas ...
We must
- doninate clearances
- not turn it over.
- fill the hole to help fish on cameron
- keep the pressure up

Do all that and we will win comfortably.
The football we play works in everyone. We pressure, we switch, and we go direct to paddy bruce or rooey. What more do we need to do?? Well stop turnovers basically.
