Looks like it's an OH&S issue in any case, so simply has to be dispensed with

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
I would be fairly certain that if Messrs Fitzpatrick & Demetriou were making the push you would be complaining about them messing with the tradition of the game
potential injuries aside - i believe it has a lot to do with errant ball recalls and the ensuing media outcry that follows
Develop a compressed air system installed in the ground or at least throw it up but dont let it become like netball or basketball where the opposing team restarts the game

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
Happy to get rid of it, too random (even when "contestable") and there's no downside to just throwing it up, except upsetting the diehard traditionalists.

At what age does making up lame names for people or teams become chingeworth and childish?

I think there is a "downside"shrodes wrote:Happy to get rid of it, too random (even when "contestable") and there's no downside to just throwing it up, except upsetting the diehard traditionalists.
ok I dont have any figures to back this up - but i think the bounce down goes higher than a ball up
this gives the ruckman the chance to time the run up and leap ( different from jump - if you know what I mean )
the ball up becomes more like a basketball center start - where vertical jump is king
the game has developed into two body types
180-190cm onballers
195 - 200+ key position
and lean athletes that can run all day

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
I hate this recall s***. Just bounce the ball and wherever it lands the players contest and play on - like Devilhead said.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
I'd be in favour of that, but as devils advocate - surely you couldn't have that happen with 5min to in a GF with scores tied? Would be a lot of VERY unhappy fans.Jacks Back wrote:I hate this recall s***. Just bounce the ball and wherever it lands the players contest and play on - like Devilhead said.
And knowing the saints usual luck, if it happened - it would go against us!

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
All you diehard traditionalists.
Let's go back to no time on for out of bounds. No free kick for out of bounds on the full.
Deliberate rushing of behinds is all good again.
Why should In umpires skill have an effect on the game? It's crazy.
Maybe have the bounce only once - at the very start of the game and that's it.

Spanner - clearly you love those pricks but most people on here hate their guts and they were cancers for our sport.Spinner wrote:saintspremiers wrote:http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/a ... uhnzw.html

What about the first bounce of the GF and no other time during the seasonsaintspremiers wrote:All you diehard traditionalists.

Would make the start of the GF extra special.
The best bouncer of the 3 umps would get the honour of starting the match and make it a real stand out.

Or they could just hand the ball to Hickey / Longer to start the gamesaintspremiers wrote:And we have the winner here folks!Devilhead wrote:What about the first bounce of the GF and no other time during the seasonsaintspremiers wrote:All you diehard traditionalists.

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
Someone on SEN last night suggested alternate starting with the ball, after each goal Team A - then Team B - I almost spat out my dinner!
Then I thought - maybe it would work, if they were forced to dispose of it backwards and out of the square.

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
Save the bounce! As an old ruckman, I always thought the unpredictability of the bounce gave me an edge. A great and unique aspect of our game. Do we have to become basketball? Then again, Holmesy would dominate.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
Seems a little unnecessary to agree with WW as he's already agreed with himself, and me not even a ruckman! STill, the bounce is, and should remain part of the footy. The constant tweaking with the game has got to stop. We don't play with a round ball so unpredictability , as much as it hurts at times as Steve Milne knows more than most, is part of the fabric of the game.

So, 6, I agree with you. And I think you agree with WW. And he also agrees with WW. I think I can see a pattern forming. Does anyone agree?6621104 wrote:Seems a little unnecessary to agree with WW as he's already agreed with himself, and me not even a ruckman! STill, the bounce is, and should remain part of the footy. Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
bloody traditionalists - they'll probably complain when we swap to a round ball (more predictability, less injuries, less contentious oob decisions, quicker game), soccer size fields (cheaper to build, maintain, quicker game), and no flag waving, heck no goal umps at all.saintspremiers wrote:All you diehard traditionalists.

Re: Time to get rid of the bounce
They do keep changing the rules - sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.
They got rid of the bounce around the ground and then what happened? Third man up as the throw up was predictable.
Now the ruckmen have to nominate who goes up FFS!!!
Just go back to bouncing the ball quickly every time and just get on with it!
