We Need A Bit Of Perspective Please
So many here rush to judge. Too, too many.
Round One and we are already heading for oblivion. According to some. Come on. Get a grip.
Quite frankly Melbourne was always going to be a danger game. The Dees are a good side this year. So are we. Let me say that again. So is St Kilda.
Granted it was not on show at Etihad first game of the season. We had a fantastic second quarter and then got blown off the park by Melbourne's hurricane midfield.
Gawn is All Australian. He proffered a not so gentle reminder of that fact to Tom Hickey. But Hickey wasn't the only St Kilda player to take a bath.
A lot of blokes who are normally really good for us like Armo, Ross, Newnes and Weller were pretty ordinary. I don't know what you call it. Blowing off cobwebs. Call it whatever you like. But one game does not define a season. Sorry.
A lot of good sides lost unexpectedly at the weekend. We were one of them.
Richo got it right when he said we either losers or learners. This week we have a real opportunity to show we are the latter and not the former.
It won't be easy. WCE had a fantastic win. Kennedy kicked 7, McCras 4 and Mitchell had 38 touches. We are not good on the road. We have not been good against the Weagles in Perth.
All the more incentive I would have thought. Brown and Carlisle need to prove they are worth the trouble. Maybe we need Koby Stevens, if he is fit, at the expense of an established name to give us more grunt and a chance of matching Mitchell. Dempster and Acres are also a possibility of playing. Maybe even a certainty.
We need to pick the best side possible to give ourselves a chance. And if people aren't performing they will be playing for Sandringham until they do. No problem with that IMO.
There is a lot of footy left to play. Keep your nerve and keep supporting the Saints. They'll turn it all around mark my words.

I agree /-after one loss all the negative Johnnies come out of the woodwork.
It's been proven many times you can lose badly one week and then play out of your skin the next.
Let's give it a few weeks before the doom and gloom!

Re: We Need A Bit Of Perspective Please
I don't think that that is the issue. We are not headed for oblivion. The question that many are asking is are we yet good enough to play finals in 2017? And if not will we be so in 2018?damienc wrote:

We have a tougher draw than last season. In addition IMO there are more teams this year ripe to push fora finals place and so it it will IMO be the hardest year ever to make the 8 and play finals.
We defeated the Dees twice last year, and so to lose to them this season is a real blow to our finals chances this year.
YES the Dees restructure started before StKilda's.
What we need to see happen by seasons end is to have some players become elite for us. If at the end of 2017 our only elite players are still only Steven and Roo, and possibly Joey then we will be in deep, deep trouble.

I assume you mean me?
If so what rant? I have basically stated that for us to make the big dance we need some more new elite players. Whether this comes from our "potentials" and/or draft/trade/FA.
I think we are knocking on the door of the 8, but to get inside we need some more cream.
I don't think that this will really surprise anyone as in most of the threads with any detailed discussion of our teams needs for at least the last year or more the consensus from most would be I would believe that we need 2 or 3 more gun mids to add to our sole gun mid in Steven.
Structurally our list builders consciously decided to leave this task to last. They need still to complete their mapped out plan. Jaxons has hinted that we are in discussion with one for next season.

Ross is already a gun, or close to it. For the others, I'm looking at Gresham, Acres and Steele. Problem is they are all still works in progress and until they really hit their straps we are still rebuilding.
That's why Acres omission is so frustrating. I would have thought getting senior games into him was a priority

My perspective is that we will struggle. But by all means be positive if it helps you get through what was a very poor showing. Looking forward to the positive vibes after this weeks thrashing

Re: We Need A Bit Of Perspective Please
Fair enough, you may be right.
For me, I saw all I need to see till 2018. Midfield at best, and probably doing well to end up there.
Even before Round 1, the st.Kilda hype to me seemed unfounded and quite ridiculous really.

West Coke by 87 points.
Kennedy 4 in the 1st qtr, total of 8
Mitchell 35+, Priddis same
Losers or learners?
Got belted in Perth last year, a few weeks later against Crows, what happened?
If they couldn't learn after the first Perth game, what's changed since?
New Years' Resolution?
How long do those resolutions last?

Oh FFS
When are we going to stop accepting performances like that, and just say it for what it was... piss poor
Excuses, excuses... not interested!
It was a winnable game, we surrendered at one point, it was abysmal.
Let people actually tell it like it was, and not make fkn excuses for s*** like that!!!!

Should have won that game.

No one wants a fairytale. Just an honest consistent progression. No meltdowns, no engineering of contracts and stats and no holding back youth who should be playing instead of survivors of a by gone era and no more excuses.

Re: We Need A Bit Of Perspective Please
That's hilarious
Saying that to people on a forum who obviously love StK, are still here (stuck fat through 12, 13, 14) and are still about
Better still some through 2000-2002
Or better still
77-86
Seriously mate, you think you're impressive because you're sticking fat after one loss?!
I, like others are just reviewing for what it was... a rubbish display

Maybe the players got lost on the way to the entrance and that is why they were late.Darth Vader wrote:Too much f***ing perspective.

Re: We Need A Bit Of Perspective Please
Only real positives to come out of that game is we can't do much worse and only lost by 30 points.
Our forward line didn't fire 2ND game in a row. Midfield blown away. Back line did OK considering the delivery and lack of midfield pressure..
This week I wouldn't make massive changes. Maybe the week to bring in acres or joey to try on wing bring in paddy and give rest team a revvup. If brown can hold Kennedy to 2-4 and Carlisle grows a little. Never know your luck especially both teams having to fly back and one day extra.
