Priority Pick

Post: # 1804826Post B.M »

Will go to the Suns

In a year when best mates are a clear 1 & 2 the AFL will deliver both of them to GC in an attempt to build their list.

GC will Then have Lukosius, Rankine, B.King, Rowell, Anderson from the last two drafts to add to Sexton, Wright, Brodie, Ainsworth, Fiorini, Miller, Weller, Bowes, McPherson

Which will make them a better young list than ours.

It also makes other early picks more difficult to Access, ie Brodie Kemp as you drop down the draft order

I don't think the AFL will give them one. Carlton have been worse for longer

Even we have a better case than them for a priority pick given we are likely to lose both McCartin and Roberton to career ending injury's

I think the AFL will, because they are desperate for the expansion clubs to succeed, or at least grow a supporter base. They are less concerned about clubs who already have a supporter base. They want new members, audiences from NSW and Queensland. The best way to do that, is to plonk successful teams there. GC and GWS have already been given outrageous concessions upon start up, and because it didn’t work with GC they will be given a further leg up. At the detriment of lowly established clubs.

There should be a rule that if you're granted a priority pick then you must trade it. It can be for picks, players, or a combination. But you're not allowed to carry that to the draft.

Imagine if pick 2 was genuinely on the table. How many teams would scramble and offer up a decent trade to get that pick?

No way the Gold Coast Bums are getting a PP. Not until they relocate to Tassie, anyway.

This would be a total waste of time as getting in good young talent is not the problem that GC has.Their problem is losing that talent. It is what stuffs up their age and experience profile.

Gaining picks 1 and 2 just would be an extra player for the Pies etc to add to their shopping list for a few years time. This also makes it harder for the Saints to be rise as our picks are worse but teams at the top still gain access to young guns.

The AFL tried last year with their access to state players to try and improve their age profile, but that is not good enough either.

What GC needs is better ability to fend off offers for their best younger players. ie Perhaps the ability to pay more to their Top 5 young players to make it harder for them to be poached?

Or ways for them to gain better mature age players.

ie
1/ Priority draft access to any mature age player. ie 23+
2 Salary Cap advantage in trading in mature age player/s

Pretty sure priority picks are at the end of round 1, not the start.

Due to Paddy and Robertons health issues beyond everyone's control.... We should get a priority pick.

What is a much bigger issue is that restricted FA’s can go to any club.

The top 4 should next excluded.

It was a joke how Lynch could just waltz into Richmond without them having to give up a pick, and penalised us directly by pushing us down the draft order.

To me, that’s completely f***ed up.

The idiots that run the AFL will continue to make it very hard for Shyte clubs to come good.

No, it won't.
We tried that once and even with a far superior team we couldn't make a success of it. No way do the AFL want us to do to Tassie what we are doing in China and how we stunk it up in New Zealand.
Nobody would come to see us once the novelty wears off. Look at our performance on Sunday - 8 goals down at the beginning of the second quarter...
Dad: Hey kids wanna go see the Saints this weekend? They're the new Tassie team now!
Kids: No thanks, we'll watch the Hawks on Foxtel.
We would convert so many young Tasmanians to soccer that FIFA would be our sponsor.

I agree that any pp they get will be pick 19 not pick two as the AFL is well aware of talented players going to gold coast and then not develop like they hoped. How many early picks have they made stars?

They have been previously but you don't think the AFL will engineer this specifically to achieve an outcome? The AFL has 16 adopted children and 2 of its own ...

The biggest problem is for RFA/FA - it's that the team losing a player gets a "compensation pick" for doing so. And the pick is determined arbitrarily by the AFL. I mean - the Hawks only getting pick 19 for Buddy. Melb getting pick 3 for Frawley. Really? That - by definition then stuffs up all of the other teams in line for the top new young talent.

We are the only professional organisation in the world that dishes out compensation picks for the RFA/FA's leaving.

Guy McKenna is all over it. He's recently said that the GCS doesn't need any more kids. They need mature, strong, experienced bodies to protect the kids and give them a chance to show their skills without getting belted.

This dovetails in nicely with Terry Wallace's suggestion - not a priority pick - give them two picks in a mini-draft which then have to be traded. That way - the GCS gets some reasonable mature talent in and the team(s) offering the best deal gets access to the best young talent.

That would suit us perfectly - imagine being able to package-up Ross and Newnes (precisely the type of players we don't need but GCS do) in order to get access to elite talent?

Why would the AFL give a s*** if we come good? They want us to exist, as it means an extra game each week.

But the difference between us being good, and us being being rubbish is only about 10k people at the ground each week. It's negligible really.

It's about the big clubs staying big. That's where the value is.

No compensation

So when Billings walks as a free agent we get zero for him
And Essendon get an A Grader for nothing?

So big clubs continually get fed top 25yo players developed by poor clubs who receive zero compensation

If you lose a valuable commodity you should get something in return

We should NEVER have stopped playing games in Tassie

It was in the top 5 stupid decisions of the last decade

And that’s saying something!

Not sure if that is a random thought bubble, or if you are replying to someone in particular???

..but that is not how Free Agency works. If a club loses a FA they get compensation unless they are also recruiting a FA. Exception being when the FA is low value and does not generate a compensatory pic.

PS: I have always thought that the FA model we have is deeply flawed as the club receiving the FA has to give up nothing directly and due to this it means that top teams are unfairly advantage.

That's a very narrow view. Or you could get pick 13 for say, Brendon Goddard and waste it on a spud anyway in Tom Lee.

I really do wish we all barracked for a power club and I hold out hope that somehow we'll magically go from Hawthorn v.2004 to v.2019 but, sometimes - I wonder whether giving us and the other sh!t clubs compensation picks and priority picks will help when we/they can't do anything useful with the help provided anyway.

As for Essendon getting Billings - that ship has already sailed. He went there last year for pick 9 according to Ted. "Done deal".

Billings signed for 2 for a reason

He’s a free agent after that, and can choose his destination and price

So Saints would get compensation for him then. Just not as much as possible trade may.

Personally I think Billings also chose the period so that he could assess the new coach.

Suns have demanded it...claim there's no point in getting pick #19. I'm guessing they've proven they're far too good for that. Arrogant pricks.
