Yep, so true. Generally well regarded by the players and Saints supporters alike, despite the attempts by a very few to tarnish his reputation. :D :D :)

The players generally were very staunch in their support of Lyon, thereby tarnishing their credibility!

GT built the foundations and created the blueprint for sustained success. Lenny is a selfless character, and one of the most courageous leaders and a smart guy who knew and believed with that big heart of his where the team was heading under the leadership of GT.

I think he knew that guys like Max Hudgton were a vital part of the heart and soul of the club and that leaving Maxy out of that 2009 GF might have led to the cracks that formed within some sections of the club. I think it was also wrong and symbolic of Lyon’s selfish and short sighted attitude to lose and offload some of the guys who were overcoming long term injuries.

It was an ugly period in 2009 where Lyon had planned to offload a former captain in Luke Ball and other quality people like Goose and Xman. And on the other hand...Lyon was prepared to introduce dubious characters like Lovett.

Lenny understands more than most that it takes more than just tactics or a great game plan to be able to build the foundations of a great side. Lenny understands that the bonds required in a team sport to reach the pinnacle of your competition means that you make sacrifices for the sake of the team.

He speaks at the 17.40 mark about the fact that GT had spoken to the group about some of the ‘stars’ making sacrifices in their potential salaries so that the group could achieve the ultimate. That’s in stark contrast to the period under Lyon where a select few were allowed to bleed the club of opportunities for sustained success.

Didn't take long to hijack this thread into another Grant v Ross showdown, did it?

Like your comments, Scollop, all the same.

add max
and lyons relationship with our new fullback

before he came ... then did)

I’ve been one of Tossers biggest critics on this forum when it comes to his time at St Kilda but you can’t ignore his human side

He’s made some mistakes and he’s learnt a lot throughout his journey as a leader and a coach

I heard Harley Bennell being interviewed on SEN this morning. He spoke about Ross Lyon and the impact he’s had on his life.

Harley spoke about the people who have helped him on the long road back to playing AFL

He calls Ross his ‘life coach’ and iirc, he told Garry Lyon that Ross calls him or speaks to him on a daily basis....

That sounds like an extraordinary thing to do and I’d be pretty confident that Ross is not doing it for any monetary reward

I think Lenny also acknowledges that Ross had a slow start as a senior coach but he soon became a very good people manager

No you can't ignore his human side, nor certain issues raised by certain Freo staff members and the lies he told to the saints.

I have to say that I pretty much agree wholeheartedly with all the points you've made.

Fooling Nettlefold and Westaway and his board would be one of the easiest thing a functioning adult over the age of 13 could accomplish
