That’s a shame if true.

I don’t know why but I always really liked him. That he was a decent coach

If this is a pre-existing illness, questions need to be asked.

Apparently, the club was not aware.

Not a great look on North or the coach if true.

Some people can handle pressure.
Some people can't.

Then there is the unfortunate few who think they can handle it but actually can't.

All the best to Rhys going forward.

I wonder what happened at North in 2020.

So many assistant coaches moved on at seasons end, did they not agree with the senior coaches ideas.

Did some of them try to undermine Rhys, there's got to be more to it than we may ever know.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I don't think many realize just how much pressure a senior coach is under, especially in one of those under resourced clubs facing extinction.
Tough gig and he faced up to it each week. Poor bloke, hope he gets well soon, seems like a very decent guy.

It's a tough industry.
Some seem to thrive, others find it tough.
I think Ratts has the perfect temperament for it.

It's hard to warm to anyone related to Tony and Ray Shaw, but hopefully Rhys recovers.
Perhaps his issues are related to the club falling apart this year?

Guaranteed that Rossco will baulk at taking on any job where he can't walk in to a finals ready team

On the other hand....if GWS sack Leon or if Dees sack Goody he'll be asking "where do I sign?"

Really? What questions exactly should be asked?

I'm pretty sure there's no "Are you undiagnosed bi-polar?" / "are you likely to suffer a nervous breakdown if our season spirals out of control and our idiot Board and madman Football Director decides to sack 14 players"? questions on the coaching application form.

My family has a background in public mental health and undiagnosed bi-polar is incredibly common and often the 'tells' don't manifest until the patient is placed under circumstances involving extreme pressure. It's the sleeping giant of mental health and has been for many years. Watching Rhys' last couple of press conferences - I actually thought he was already suffering depression.

Very sad situation for Rhys and disastrous for North.

How many of us at the time thought it was a mistake to engage Rhys as the head coach. I mean crickey I thought the industry had learnt it's lesson with Voss and Heard. He was just too bloody young for that role and then too bloody inexperienced. He was fed to the sharks.

I hope he makes a recovery that allows him to have a decent life.

Maybe their season spiralled out of control as his condition deteriorated and not the other way around. I believe the club were unaware of his illness and called an emergency meeting half way through the season.

I think we all have some experience with it Matt and I know a bit about serious bi-polar as I lived it for 5 years but thanks for this info. It is sad for all parties but he shouldn't be coaching.

I'm sorry to hear of your condition SP and you seem to be managing it well - may that continue. They definitely knew about the propensity for the breakdown ... but not the bi-polar.

A massive stick needs to be pointed at Glen Archer. My god - he's singe-handedly destroying the place. Rhys is a sad by-product - not the reason. That said - not one ex-player wants to coach them - especially not Blakey

I don't have bi-polar Matt. My partner at the time had it. This sounds harsh but partners and family members also need to take care of their mental health because it has an impact as some of the behaviours can be very disturbing. Traumatic even.

That's fine but I heard otherwise about what happened at NM. I also heard that the players found out that a number of them were going to get the chop so they just stopped trying. Agree that the place sounds like a rabble.

You're dead right the players knew they were getting the chop and dropped right off. Apparently Rhys found the entire environment very confronting and difficult to operate in - asking his players to run through brick walls for him on the weekend after having cuddled them all week through the challenges of the hubs and then - as his final act - sack more than half his team the day after their final game. No wonder the poor bloke fell apart. And to think their shiny new CEO didn't go to Qld at all. WTF?

I literally have no idea how North comes out of this. They've sacked 14 players - and they have 4 draft picks this season. Even if list sizes reduce by 4 - that's another 6 players they have to find from somewhere. Do they really think they're going to find better existing players than what they've just let go? Their board has royally stuffed this up - how they ignored Brad Scott's advice to re-build is baffling.

No serious questions need to be asked.

Nobody knows if they can, ‘handle the pressure’

We are supposed to “have a go”

The media blew flowers and gushed over him last year.

We are supposed to “fake it until we make it. “

Mental health diagnostics and the whole mental health industry is now a nascent substitution for religion and faith...

I bet most of us would walk out of a mental clinic with a handy list of maladies...many of them doubtful or overlapping ..and a bag of pills

I think it is more a vicious dynamic at play...as someone said, once x happened, then y followed, and then z.

I’ve been “diagnosed” with the bipolar before...but other docs have said, “nonsense “ ...

That all said, we need get a mature and nuanced view of the mental health, but it ain’t gonna happen overnight. Meantime. ....

Wish Rhyce all the best.

Note...some media pundits...one of them well respected, said North should have swung the axe even more!

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Isn't that because Freo had to pay him out for this year as well?

Correct - that's precisely why Lyon responded in that manner to Caro's question in her Fast/Final Five questions - Ch9 and TripleM would barely cover his drinks bill compared to his departing salary at Freo. It's like why Terry Wallace was earning an absolute poultice for not coaching Sydney (when Roos got the job)
