NGA Prospects

Post: # 1955342Post Devilhead »

Couldn't seem to find a thread on this subject ... if so apologies

Just checking through some NAB Boys League notes from this year so far and we have an NGA prospect Cam Mackenzie (listed as 187cm & 80kg) who plays for Sandringham Dragons that keeps popping up in the best - see below some match notes written about him - taken from the rookieme website:

Round 2 - Sandringham v Calder Cannons

#14 Cam Mackenzie

The St Kilda NGA prospect played more midfield time than in the previous week, looking good in spurts with his burst speed and ability to evade opponents through traffic. Mackenzie applied himself to the inside game well, not afraid to crack in and win a hardball, then burst away and hand off to a teammate in close. When Mackenzie managed to find space his use by foot was good, putting it in front of teammates well and proving a danger going forward.

Round 3 - Sandringham v GWS Giants

14 Cameron Mackenzie

The St. Kilda NGA prospect was once again influential, particularly in the forward half of the ground, using his speed and agility to bring the ball out of congestion and use the ball well. Mackenzie’s ability to weight his disposals for the speed of his teammates was impressive, knowing when to put as much penetration on a kick as he could or whether to chip it for a teammate to run onto easily which made his disposals damaging. Mackenzie wasn’t afraid to crack in and pull the ball out of packs either, comfortably able to win it amongst numbers and work it out of traffic.

Round 4 - Sandringham v Tasmania Devils

#14 Cameron Mackenzie

A seemingly underrated midfield prospect who looked really good onball alongside Ashcroft, McKenzie was clean, net and not phased by pressure around him. He set up scoring opportunities going inside 50 and racked up the ball with ease. Like Ashcroft, very few of his touches did not make their way into Dragons hands, and almost always made good decisions with ball-in-hand. McKenzie had a highlight in the third term by fending off a couple and still managing to get the ball away and finish with 25 disposals.

Looks a prospect which we could get with a later pick .... if he doesn't go inside the top 20

Might have to use our first rounder to secure him.

Some early mock drafts have him just inside the Top 20 .... others not even in the Top 40

Played junior footy with Beaumaris FC ... same as Michito & Windhager

And is at Brighton Grammar .... so won't play for Sandringham all season

Brighton Grammar so far undefeated after 3 rounds and Mackenzie was BOG in their win over Carey in Rd 2 ...... no best players/goalkickers named in Rd 1 or Rd 3

Definitely one to keep an eye on

It's getting to the stage where it hardly worth it . Pick 40 last year pick 20 this year makes it a difficult choice to pick the NGA player over a good prospect . I think the AFL saw what we picked up last year & changed the rules accordingly .Typical of the AFL . Put the hard yards in & groom prospects for some other club to reap the benefits really what's the point IMO only .

?? It was Pick 20 last year ..... or else we would not have got Michito .... or is it now in 2022 you can only match after Pick 40?

Actual here it is .... didn't realise this .... pretty much phasing out the NGA system

From 2022, clubs will have even less access to NGA players. Next year, they will only be able to match bids for NGA prospects from pick 41 onwards, meaning essentially the first two rounds of the draft are off-limits for NGA players. It is a significant phase-out of the NGA system.

May as well as delete this thread then!! :D

Most phantoms I have seen have him in the top 20. It would be a great story if we could get him with our 1st round pick, particularly now he is looking more like a genuine midfielder,

If you can't match until 41 what is the point?

Can't wait for the year that we finally have a decent father son and they change the rules just before draft day.

Yep. Sons of players born in the apple isle will have to play for the Tasmanian team.

Weren't the NGA rules changed after the draft where the Bulldogs matched a bid for their NGA player, Ugle Hagen, and the comp whined that they got him for unders.

At this point, whatever pick they spent on Ugle Hagen, is looking like overs, nut that might change, if they are very patient.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
