Until Goddard did his Achilles.

Also Hickey and Stanley would easily be the worst ever starting rucks in a Grand Final.

Did Dylan Shiel text Luke Parker, perhaps say just shrug your shoulders Luke, it was only a Grand Final.

Aaron Keating wasn’t that much better than Brett Cook. He was probably worse.

Cooke I’d take over Hickey and depending on Stanley’s mood maybe him.

Point missed again anyway both ruckman in this years GF are low end

Or it could be analysed based on some made up stuff about underdone players and others missing.

Is that the best you can come back with? :)
Stick to my point of discussion rather than taking a snipe.
It's not made up mate. They did have underdone players and in any case, if we were so worthy, why did we have our pants pulled down In the return game?
Winners are grinners and Geelong are clearly miles ahead of us. They beat us, their A-game is much better and they trumped the competition where and when it mattered.
Your point was that Geelong had a weak team when we beat them.
This is plainly not true.

Yes Geelong are a better team than us, I'm not sure who you are arguing against on that point. But why are you trying to downplay what was a very good win for us?
Kosifantutti, you are correct and my statement on the Geelong team list for the May game was inaccurate...I apologize for that. I should have rechecked as that win became a distant memory with the way the second half of this season unfolded.
However, they did have underdone players. Selwood and Stanley returned for the game and both struggled, Stanley I recall went off in 2nd half, Dangerfield was unusually flat. A friend who is a staunch Cats supporter and is on cloud 9 this weekend was telling us a few were shaking off a virus.
The win was great at the time but we weren't even competitive in the return game, so that was the reality check for me.

Both Hickey and Stanley have been more than serviceable ruckman over their careers

Numbers back it up

Both have beaten Max Gawn head to head

Stanley has a medal

The Achilles wasn’t Hugh Goddards problem - player get back from that.

It was a turning circle of a big boat, speed of a snail and no agility that was the issue

It was round 9, yeah? There was still a lot of water to go under the bridge?

Not sure why you need to keep making excuses for the opposition.

We had lost our way weeks before the return game. Against Essendon for instance.

Would you like to tell us all about the players they had out and who were flat and that they should have flogged us by 200 points.

Boring.

Anyway - Ruckmen aside - Paddy still managed to kick more than Buddy - gotta love that!

I saw a bit of Hugh play at Scotch.
At 16 he was seriously talked about as a future #1 pick.

Had a growth spurt & as he grew he did lose agility and speed.

By the time we recruited him he wasn’t so much a slider.

I agree if you are good enough you can recover from most injuries. To suggest he didn’t make it because of that is excuse making IMO.

Look at Ferguson Watts, the common theme here was he didn’t make it because of injury, however the guy himself said he lacked the desire or words to that effect.

Players like the Ox had three recos and still went on and played. The Ox was a jet pre injury and was never the same player but he still came back after 3 to play good footy.

Besides the first 2 goals - which I’ve seen Hawkins do that to ruckmen a hundred times

I thought he battled away

Beaten by Stanley but I thought he wasn’t their worst

I wrote the OP at quarter time from memory.
Should have written mare first quarter.

Parker was comfortably Sydney’s 2nd best player behind Warner.

Not sure Shiel’s zero GF experience would’ve counted for much in the opinion stakes

The Kama bus. Ridicule not lest you be on the wrong end of an 81 point margin. Don't need GF experience to have an opinion on that.

Agree, was more referring to the two boundary throw ins where Hawkins foaled after manhandling poor old Hickledik.
i think you would have to agree that Hickey had a better season than Billy Longer.
But then Stone Cold could never admit it !!!!!

Hickey was far from the problem…

But it’s his tendency to have performances like that with some degree of regularity that have stopped him from climbing into the elite group of rucks in the AFL.

Solid career but I can’t say that losing him has been particularly hurtful.

The player who has had a good season is Rhys Stanley

Rarely beaten this season
