Montagna reveals impressive stats on Mitch Owens

Post: # 2007854Post Sanctorum »

If you didn't see this last night, Leigh Montagna on Fox Footy AFL 360 gave a big tick to the way Mitchito Owens goes about his business, revealing Owens' impressive statistics so far in 2023:

Top Rated Forwards:

#1 Charlie Curnow - 16.3
#2 Jeremy Cameron - 15.5
#3 Toby Green - 14.6
#4 Tom Hawkins - 14.1
#5 Mitch Owens & Charlie Cameron - 13.9

Post Clearance Contested Possession:

#1 Mitch Owens - 68
#2 Charlie Curnow - 54
#3 Darcy Moore - 54
#4 Alir Alir - 52
#5 Liam Baker - 51

He said for a 19 year old playing just 15 games that was a huge tribute to Owens' potential and bodes well for the future of St Kilda.

"I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened."

"Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen."

It's time to play him in the midfield.

We have plenty of true forward options in King, Membrey, Caminiti.

He can be a better version of Luke Jackson.

Couldn’t agree more. May upset the existing midfield order a little, but football ought to be a meritocracy. He’s already good enough.

A Cripps who kicks more goals

I don't think Luke Jackson is the right comparison

I tend to agree, a bigger, stronger, fitter version of a Stringer / De Goey, both can play midfield but both dangerous forward because of their agility & football smarts.

I really hope he's nothing like Luke Jackson, other than a Premiership Player (for St Kilda).

He does have a freaky way of ending up with the ball in his hands whenever it is in dispute.
I kept thinking "that was lucky....that was lucky..."

His game last week was more my point than how he played for Melbourne.

Ruckman sized on-baller.

Owens is far better than Cripps and De Goey in the air.

He’s the next Bontempelli, Cripps, Fyfe player who can jump higher than all of them. Unleash him in the midfield

Free the Chitoooooo!

#10 - his rating (out of 10)

If his Forward craft reflects his Midfield craft he will be unstoppable - And he is a pretty handy ruck as well!

Roma and The Chito!

I haven't seen a kid so sure of his own ability to win contested football since Wayne Carey.

I love the way he'll take to his opponent to the boundary, wrong foot them, fend them off and the run around them, can do it with just sheer pace and a great step too.

Given those stats I don't quite understand the rush to put Owens in the centre. He clearly would be very good as we have already had glimpses, however the stats below suggests he is doing something remarkably well but which he woudnt be able to do as a pure mid.

Here is a question - if we play Owens as a pure mid who do we have that will take over from him to be the best Post Clearance Contested Possession gatherer in the AFL?

Post Clearance Contested Possessions:

#1 Mitch Owens - 68
#2 Charlie Curnow - 54
#3 Darcy Moore - 54
#4 Alir Alir - 52
#5 Liam Baker - 51

Not "Simon Templar". He was here first. Please change my username to Bumstead and if possible make me one of those very large sandwiches, thanks!

That has to be Mattaes Phillipou, Templar....

Currently Phillipou doesn't have an established position on the field, in fact he and Owens are much alike physically and in the way they attack the ball and both can be deployed anywhere on the ground.

Has St Kilda ever had such a young pair of promising big bodied middies such as these two?

And when was the last time St Kilda had two successive years tecruiting 4 super quality players: Windhager, Wanganeen-Milera, Owens, Phillipou, make that 5 if Caminiti continues to do well as a key forward.

Add the complete overhaul in the off season of Football Operations with a totally refreshed game plan directed by a very experienced and successful senior coach, and we're finally, finally, coming out of the tunnel of darkness.
