It would be interesting to see some other statistics :-
How we rank in most tackles laid?
Is there a correlation between tackling and getting/giving frees?
What area of the ground we were penalised?
What areas of the ground we received frees?
How many frees we gave/received for deliberate oob?
How many frees we gave/received for out on the full?
Who of our players gave the most free kicks away?
Who of our players received the most free kicks?

to name just a few

Marshall has been awarded the most frees (41)
He and Dan Butler have also given away the most (24)

4th in Tackles (1468)

No idea for the rest,

You could always make it up, then you'd be in sync with the umpiring fraternity

Amazing how we have a coach with some media clout and we get a better run.

Glad Curly can admit the umpires are actively and deliberately cheating FOR us this year to help us make finals, including an incredible 20-5 our way against Geelong to basically lock in our spot.

Nice to see my "swings and roundabouts" philosophy when it comes to umpiring even covers the weeks/years they decide to cheat for you and weeks/years they decide to cheat against you.

:)

15-10 in a 6 point loss to Collingwood is what hurts. So many blatant infringements ignored to get them up. The Geelong game we had a great runt the first four frees we actually had the ball nad it was advantage anyway.

And 2 soft 50s for goals in the 4th quarter against Sydney in a close game that got us over the line, thanks umps!

Also commendations to them for doing their very best to get us over the line against Port and Richmond, we let them down that day.

We're used to having only one Saints man infiltrating the umpiring ranks and helping us out, now we've got them all! :D

No I think it is more of a case that the maggots collective guilty consciences caught up with them.

The +/- ratio is irrelevant. It is why you get paid free kicks that matters and, in our case, being first to the ball and continually laying tackles that stick would be the greater factor in our improvement in this area. We have earnt more frees.

You forgot the North Melbourne match where we got the benefit of a very timely free, just as Luke Davies Uniacke was bursting clear and running towards goal

Here's how the Mongrel Punt saw that incident

"With St Kilda up by three points deep into the last quarter, Luke Davies-Uniacke burst clear from a contest at half-forward, with an open 50 ahead of him, until he was called back to the scene of the contest by a field umpire, who’d spotted a holding free kick to Rowan Marshall against Eddie Ford during the preceding contest. I’d like to stress that I didn’t see what happened due to my position at the ground, and only saw the replays of this free. But to put it bluntly, it looked bloody soft, and it looked like Marshall had put more mayo on his physical reaction to the contact than Nan does on her New Years’ potato salad."

So since 2010 its only the 3rd time we have been in the positive for frees ..... 3 out of 14 years .... but hey let's just ignore that

Nice to get a decent run for a change

What's the protocols, apologise for getting frees, rage when other side does?
Does the current stat broadly suggest better techniques/ more discipline than displayed in recent years. Or might it be Ben Long went to the Suns.

That is a very misleading stat, given we broke even in 2010.

Since 2007 we have been positive 7 times, 1 break even and 9 negative.

The funny part is the negative free kick ratio last year was proof the umps were cheating against us.

Now that ratio is positive and we are the ALF's biggest beneficiary, the stat is no longer posted on a weekly basis or relevant, yet some supporters still bitch and moan.

How good do we want it before we are happy?

We want all legitimate free kicks paid
We want no illegitimate free kicks paid
We want all 50/50 decisions to be accurate and not guesses by the umpires
We want free kicks to be paid/unpaid consistently by all 4 umpires in the match

We’re not asking much
Just for the umpires to do their job properly

It is a common fallacy to believe that if you are in the positive it's because the umpires are looking after you and if you're in the negative then they are cheats. It COULD be that the team is just playing sloppy vs playing smart.

450 to 504 in 2010 isnt breaking even ..... thinking you were just looking at home game stats which was 226 to 226

3-11 in the last 14 years .... seems consistently like the rough end of the stick to me

That’s damning evidence.
Some bloke on some obscure site who wasn’t watching thought it wasn’t a free.
