Darren Jolly

Post: # 446572Post Animal Enclosure »

I read with interest in the little paper this morning that Darren Jolly is considering a move back to Melbourne (the first part of the article was about the swans being after Cameron Wood as a replacement). This would have to have the saints' brain trust talking.

With Jolly's past relationship to Lyon, you could suggest that we would be a real chance to gain his services.

Thoughts?

I'd rate Jolly a damn side better than all of those nominated. A quality tap ruckman who isn't injury prone, can take a mark around the ground & kick straight. Not sure how that classifies as average Plugger. It surprises me that you two don't rate him.

The problem is he gets one mark and one kick a game. Maybe thats a bit unfair but doesnt get enough of the ball.

Jolly would have to be a lot better than any of those mentioned. And, like you say AE, he's not injury prone like some of our other ruckmen.

I can't say I've noticed him much.

sydney has developed him into a superb ruckman in my opinion and one consantly gets first hand on the ball for his mid's

however with kosi, a theorectically fully fit gardiner and rix along with blake if worst comes to worst...do we really need him??

must would depend on jkosi and where he is best suited...personally i like kosi as a pinch hitting ruckman and a bit of a floater...his high-flying marks both down back and up forward prove this...he is also a super linkman due to his long and accurate kicking...

how old is jolly???26ish???

would we get 5 years out of him???

again not having seen much of him, the numbers indicate he doesn't mark, or link very often.

A potential combo of Jolly & Gardiner would be pretty sweet. Kosi up forward would scare the bejeezus out of sides. I know Kos is great around the ground but if I was an opposition supporter I know where I rather see Kosi line up...and it's not deep in the forward line.

Of course the cost of getting him is a totally different thing...Saints have a good trading relationship with the Swans, unlike Hawthorn & Collingwood who have alienated just about everyone.

I hope we don't start getting the Sydney rejects, a bit like we did with Watson and players of his 'era'.

Fair enough Dan, they took Plugger & Barry when we probably would have wanted to keep them but we got Jack Daniels back!

My point being, the trading relationship is ok whereas other clubs try to screw everyone else so they can say they 'won'. Chris Pelchen of Hawthorn being a reasonable example.

I reckon Jolly is worth a go, personally think he is a dinosaur or a swans reject...he wants to come home to melbourne according to the report. We still need a decent ruckman & I was just putting forward my opinion.

BTW, there's no way I'd part with a 1st round pick & even a 2nd rounder might be a stretch.

Jolly is 25/6, averages 10 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles and 20 hitouts a game and shares half the time with Spider....

Personally I think he is a very good young ruckman who would look great in the red, white and black.

Agree... With still have MG for 2008, so I think we don't need a recycled ruckman (unless Cox wants to be swapped for M. Clarke).

1. I have no problem with screwing opposition clubs over. TBH we got screwed by sydney and Freo and adelaide after we treated heath black and begley with respect. Freo knew thus and pharked us around.

2. Sydney pharked us around (obrien, lockett, hall)

in fairness we screwed Footscray over penny (and how they laughed when his career ended early (assholes while I think we did treat footscray badly who laughs when a decent kids career is affected with career ending injuries and emotional stress???!)) and we screwed brisbane over v2 (they were pissed), although we did give pick 4 for hamill (and they blame us for them drafting livingstone ><)

Kosi
Rix
Gardiner
Brooks
Van Rheenen
Clarke*
Blake+

* Gone after this year
+ Not really a ruckman but can if necessary

This year, that's 6 ruckmen on our list. We cannot afford to have more than 5 ruckmen on our list, IMO. Especially when a few are GOP at best.

If (and I think we should count on it) Gardiner plays 18+ games in 2008, then we won't need Rix and/or Brooks.

Van Rheenen won't be elevated next year, but should develop a lot in the VFL and may push for elevation if Brooks is delisted and Gardiner is injured.

How can we count on Gardiner playing 18 games when he has played about 15 in the last 3 years. Having said that Brooks will have to go this year. Not rated in RL opinion obviously.

Finally getting all the surgery he needs to fix his ongoing problems, once they are right, and if he gets a full preseason under his belt there's no reason he shouldn't play a large portion of the games. Obviously we wouldn't have signed him up for another year if this wasn't the case.
