Sampi?

Post: # 457911Post peter lockwood »

I know he went bush to get his head straight and he would carry some baggage.Supposedly is back and can see what he,d be giving up and doesnt mind shifting to get a fresh start.Would he be a nice fit for the Saints?Could work in tandem with Milney working off the spoils of Roo,Kosi & Watts.Could also do some some relieving work in the middle in spurts.Would bring in some speed and flair and kick goals something that we agree we definately need.Wouldnt cost the earth either!Thoughts? :D

One year contract. Minimum pay. Give practically nothing for him. Sack him straight away if he slips up.

Won't happen, but I'd do it.

If the price was right, why the heck not?

He's got loads of talent.

Now that Sweeney is gone, there would be an immediate role for him in the Scorpions, with potential for promotion if he goes well there.

What would be needed is a lot of work to ensure that Sampi settles into a nurturing, supportive social/family environment in Melbourne. He strikes me as being a classic case of an Aborigine from a remote part of Australia who has been unable to adjust to (a) living in a big city; (b) being the focus of attention from media and fans; (c) being geographically separated from family and friends (hard for anyone from the bush, but triply so for Aborigines).

Yes, there is an enormous risk if he found life in Melbourne no easier to deal with than in Perth (although at least he would be only one of several hundred, rather than several dozen, elite footballers: which might make it a bit better for him).

But imagine the benefits if we could bring him back to his best form? I, at least, can remember how he used to play when he was at his best. It was rather good, to say the least.

I suppose he would have the benefit of some actual role models...

Having X around would be a huge plus for Sampi.

X, Raph in support.

At worst > fails, goes home at the end of the year. Paid in chips. No damage.

At best > 35-45 goal a year forward with a few Toyota's for walk abouts.

Definitely worth giving the young guy a chance... He has shown that he can play.

May be another Sean Charles though...

Agree. I'd love to have a crack at getting him right, but yeah, it's a delicate one.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

If he displays genuine interest to play id take him for sure.
23. Can play. We need a quality small forward.

Look at Motlop at Port. Same people that wouldnt take Sampi wouldnt have taken Motlop for the same reasons.

Absolutely no way. The last thing we need is another re-cycled failure from another club with a huge question mark over him. Hard enough for him being in Perth away from his family in Broome. How do you think he'll go in Melb. in the middle of winter?
Definite no from me.

No way. Would rather a young gop take a spot on the list. Am sick and tired of the 'potential stars' getting a go on our list. They are extremely hit and miss.
The draft is no guarantee but i'd rather deal with kid with a clean slate, fresh ideas and eagerness than someone who's had it and then thrown it away.

if we can't get someone like faulkner this could be a go.

In fact stkilda with the clarke boys might be the best place for him. They have done some fantastic development work.

no no no
something isnt cheap if you dont need it !!!
sampie is still young but as slow as doc clark
he mind wanders both on feild and off
hes far to out of shape (think derrick kickett in the allstars game)
no way on the earth should we be looking at him

i would like to know where you heard .
Supposedly is back and can see what he,d be giving up and doesnt mind shifting to get a fresh start
cause from my sources he is still in a fairly bad place mentally but does hold hopes of resurecting his carrer at a later date

I remember when young Ashley was in the draft and I was hoping we would pick him because he looked good.

But it's just as well I am not on any selection panel down at the club, because I should know more than most that it would risky. I know his uncle very well and have stayed with his father when Ashley was very much younger.

If he was ever going to make it he would have made it in a Perth environment where he can get back home much easier - rarely do 'indiginous locals' from the Broome region go away from their region for extended periods of time. Neverthess, it is always tempting for anyone that excells in their field to move to the city because there are limited opportunies available to them locally, although in the Kimberley there are some, especially for an ex-AFL player.

Family ties are very strong (compared with most non-indiginous family groups) and Broome is roughly 2,300 kilometres from Perth.

A good example for what I am trying to say is the 'The Pigrim Brothers' musicians from Broome - with their talent they could be names that everyone on this board would know well. They supported Midnight oil on a couple of tours many years ago but decided they were attached to the Broome life and their 'very' extended families too much to choose fame over lifestyle . . . and I must admit the location and lifestyle in that region is pretty bloody good for both indiginous and non-indigenous people alike.

Nevertheless Ashley does come from a more stable sub-cultural background than some indiginous AFL players and the Clarke brothers who are a rock in that area may be able to offer him enough support to survive well for a three or four years.

Nah, not worth it. Wouldn't add much to the team.
