Matthew Drain Appointed Football Manager?

Post: # 476805Post dascman »

Just saw on Fox Sports News Channel (513 on Digital), along the bottom it said that St Kilda had appointed Western Bulldogs High Performance Manager Matthew Drain as "General Manager of Football"...don't think this has been posted here.

If this is true, good appointment?

St Kilda FC Announcement

St Kilda Football Club CEO Archie Fraser has today announced the appointment of Matthew Drain as General Manager Football.

Matthew Drain joins the Saints following the completion of his contract as High Performance Manager with the Western Bulldogs.

A respected and experienced sports administrator, Drain has worked in AFL with Essendon in its 2000 premiership season and as High Performance Manager with Cricket Australia and brings to the Saints a high degree of commercial expertise, current and relevant football knowledge and a range of complementary skills.

“We are delighted to have a person of Matthew’s calibre and experience join the Club and we look forward to his positive contribution to the running of our football department. This is a key appointment for the Club and Matthew’s broad experience will see him play a valuable role as a part of our executive management team at the Saintsâ€

Found this on google:

http://about.theage.com.au/view_award.asp?intid=99
These events followed a dispute the previous summer over the appointment of a football manager who, ultimately, was never appointed. The administration had decided to hire former Essendon football manager Matthew Drain but changed its plans in the face of opposition from Thomas and instead added responsibilities to assistant coach Matt Rendell.

Article.........

New Cricket Coaching Director takes the reigns

Scotch College is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Matthew Drain to the position of Director of Coaching for Cricket, seasons 2005 and 2006.

Matthew’s abilities and wealth of experience in a range of sporting fields will be a great acquisition to Scotch, and we are confident there will be further significant improvement in the level of performance of cricket teams at all levels under his expert guidance.

Matthew comes to us with experience playing and coaching cricket at the First XI levels at both Essendon and more recently Carlton Cricket Clubs. Matthew played 158 First XI games and was a member of the Victorian Sheffield Shield Squad. He was involved in the setting up and management of the AC B Centre of Excellence (Cricket Academy). This involved the development and implementation of programs and initiatives for cricket’s elite level performers and included players, coaches and umpires. Matthew managed and was head coach of the Australian Women’s Cricket team.

Matthew’s name is well known within the Australian Football League where he has the reputation of being a very dedicated, reliable and efficient worker. He was Football Operations Manager at Essendon from 1997 to 2002 and is currently the Western Bulldogs’ High Performance Manager.

Matthew has been employed to develop a coaching program and philosophy for both the cricket coaches and the boys at all levels. He commenced his involvement with Scotch College in late October and his contributions have already been significant. He has the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both the boys and the staff. There have been many very positive comments made about Matthew’s role and the focus he will be giving to cricket coaching.

It all adds up to an exciting time for the development of cricket at Scotch College, and we are grateful for the support of the McLeod Club in this initiative.

I am very pleased that it is aguy who has the experience to do the job....rather than justa high profile ex-AFL footballer who had yet to cut his teeth.

Maybe Drain was the reason why Ken's contract was only for 12 months????

I mean we wanted Drain 2 years ago....and if we thought he was the best man for the job it would make sense to hire a temporary Football Manager while we waited for his contract to lapse.

We were looking at hiring him in 2004....

We have had a few CEO's since then and movement at board level.....

but must have been still on some body's list.......or he approached once he knew Kenny was on way out.

I would think Kens's 12mth contract nothing to do with it

But not different CEO as in when KS was appointed.

A 12 month contract is very short.......anyway that is my conspiracy theory for the week

Anyway ....yes I am very pleased too :D

For me the momentum just seems to be building and building very nicely.....

New Football Manager

New enthusiastic Bord coming in at the right time..

New Conditioning Manager in Misson

Almost New Sports Science Committee of Ross smith and the AIS Guys.

Already dipping injury rate

Best trade week we have ever had.....for NEW depth (not stars..but good depth.....with the odds being that King and Schneider will be better than just depth and will be quite handy players..)

Recent Head Coach...now bedded in with 12 months in the job...

New found commitment from the playing group who know that they have to lift another notch.....

We seem to be heading in the right direction

I also admire the enthusiasm but didn't we have a dipping injury rate this time last year?

I'd argue the year we added Hamill, Gehrig, Lawrence, Capuano and Callaghan (2000) - added to Voss in the PSD and Kosi/Roo in the national draft - comfortably shaded last week for stars/depth.

That two-month period (include Blight, too) almost totally reshaped the direction of the club. We rode that crest until this year.

However, it was great trade week for us last week. It was exactly what we needed.

Let's hope for a bumper draft, a sneaky PSD recruit or two, a bullish set of rookies and a good injury run over the off-season. Anything could happen.

Great appointment, I have been hoping for awhile that he would join.

Have known Matt for at least 20 years, lives for sport of all kinds. While playing junior footy in under 18's, he coached the under 10's. Has always had an eye for managing players from a very early age and it's no suprise he has gone on to great things.
