Importance Of Goddard

Post: # 541341Post Batnoe »

I am getting wet ( and i am a bloke) thinking about Goddards return, it will take him a while to find his feet but how much better is our team with Goddard in the line up. It really frees Sam Fisher up as the sweeper role or if needed Goddard can do it, I remember in 2006 they both were used as a sweeper off half back and oppostion forwards had to defend them as it set up so much play from our back line. both being over 190cm makes it hard for any forward line to keep the ball in the forward 50. Beej is also one player that can break a flood, I dont exactly know where BJ's best position is in our team but i do know he is extremely important wherever he players

here are his stats from 2006!!

GODdard is an absolute gun, he's solid as rock and very, very skilled.

I always think of him as the BP of the team - the quiet achiever.

He's missed 15 games last year but will still play 300 games for us IMO.

Does that answer your question? :D

Most accurate long kicker in the AFL.

Punishingly penetrative long kicks. Has been caught not getting the ball away quick enough raph clarke style, but overall seems be with it.

He will be WAY out of it in his return. Will take some time to adjust.

I hope he gets a couple more weeks in the VFL TBH, it would be ideal for him to come back in round 5 for mine, I think it's a bit early for this week and I don't want him coming in for the Geelong game with no AFL match time...

After watching the replay of the Carlton match last night it really sums up just how important he is to us, we could not form a single attack from the backline for most of the match and when we did it either involved Harvey or Gram just bombing it...

Certainly in the top 5 Stinger..he was just getting to the point of becoming the elite player he is capable of being....I remember in the few weeks leading up to his injury, and in the context of his 2006 year, people were starting to acknowledge that he was a worthy #1 pick and was better than Wells, with more upside.

Didnt Goddard get dropped from the side versing Fremantle (?) - a decision seen as harsh at the time

However from that point on Brendon has become one of our best players - a good wake up call pehaps

Very excited about BJ's return. BUT am not expecting big things for the majority of this year. It took Lenny many weeks to get back to anywhere near his best following his reco.

Biggest benefit to the team will be his field kicking and penetration from half back. Apart from Chips, we just don't have any consistently good kickers back there. As good as Grammy is streaming through the middle his kicks are hit and miss. Same with Gilbert, Raph and Goose. And Max has never been a great kick.

Would also love to see BJ unload with a few his trademark torps (a bit like the bombs Dustin Fletcher unloads from 80m out).

Must be played this week if he's to play against the Cats.

Goddard is the key to the Saints gameplan IMHO. He has developed into a topline AFL player - but his skills are what gel the gameplan together. At present the opposition will focus on cutting Gram's influence as he sets up so many attacks. However, with Goddard in the team - this is increasingly more difficult as Goddard is far more lethal with his disposal than Grammy. Goddard is very strong overhead, and bigger than Grammy - yet runs the lines the same way than Grammy but kicks consistently more accurately than Grammy. Grammy is a beauty to by the way!! Just that Goddard is lethal with BOTH feet so it doesn't matter if you catch him on the wrong side. His inclusion will almost complete our structure and he is so important in setting up the attacks into a multi-talented forward line (with Grammy).

Round 1, 2007.

The most precise exhibition of kicking I've seen. He was hitting 50-60m passes on a dime.

We've missed him, and I can't wait to have him back.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
