Sean Dempster - Defence or Tagging?

Post: # 545842Post True Blue Sainter »

Where are we most likely to see him play on Saturday? Are we going to go with say, Demps on either Chapman or S. Johnson, or in the midfield going with a Bartel, Ablett or Kelly?

Personally, I think he is better suited as a defender, as there is not much of an attacking edge to his game, and he doesn't get the ball enough for a midfielder.

I think he will be playing in defence definately.

Make our string defence even stronger.

Tagging is something we need more of.

In the absence of Baker the opposition mid field is getting too much of a good thing.

i read all this stuff about him being a long kick, tall, tagger and a defender but if i saw him in a line up i would have no idea what he looks like...

Ask him to turn around, apparantly he'll be wearing 24.

well thats a good start...now we just need to know what he looks like...what he does anything apart from tagging and what we call him...

Anyway...it will be fascinating to see where he plays.

The Swans Forum when he left had a number flagging him as about to bloom...and had various ambituous tags on him.

One saw him as a forward wing type for slotting long goals from outside 50....

While some just saw him as a thereabouts steady player who could do a defensive task...I don't think any flagged him as a bad player.

The big upside to Dempster is that hes a neat penertrating kick. Somthing our defence can do with. Geary while he was great at winning the footy his kicks lacked penertration and players up the ground often had to wait underneath them. We slowly have to weed the players out of the side with sloppy skills as Geelong have.

I agree with you, I've got no idea what the bloke looks like and honestly couldn't remember hearing much about him before he became the steak knives in the Schneider deal.

Hopefully he is a handy tagger because there are a few cats that need a tight leish on Saturday arvo.

Pretty confident he's in the team to perform a run-with role. The 3 main playmakers for Geelong have been Bartel, Ablett and Corey....i expect these 3 to get close attention from Fisher, Dempster and Blake and perhaps Ball to releive at some stage. Ling will go to Dal and he really needs to break free and have a big game.
Anyway....good luck Dempster.

Dempster may well line up on Johnno.

With Johhno you need a defender that can concentrate..otherwise in a quarter he can destroy you.

With Goose in Max may take a Geelong small this week.

Sam to stay at CHB I fancy.
Goose on Hawkins??

Hope he plays in defence, If we play 3 tags then we will lose. Bomber will put the 3 tagged players in the middle together and their ball winning ability will see them get first use every time. Our defence will be under great preassure and their backs will be able to run off their opponents with confidence.

We must play our best ball winners in the guts and rotate them through to keep them fresh, Blake, Fisher and Dempster must play in set positions. Fisher and Dempster in the back line and Blake as second ruckman IMO.

Maybe this year?

I had Dempster in my supercoach side two years ago and watched him closely until he got drop and he was terrible. He is a premiership player though and I look forward to seeing him in our colors

He has a terrific long kick which could and should be well used in kick outs. Pehaps Ross might be looking at him being another tall forward who can run and kick which would create major headaches for opposition sides.

I've never seen Dempster play before - I don't even remember him from the Swans. (I almost always just focus on us when we play, regardless of the opposition). So... today's match is the only time I've seen him play. Like many of our players, he hasn't starred. Can someone tell me about his strengths and weaknesses? Do you think he will stay in the team? Is he someone you think will be in our starting 22 for the rest of the year?

On today's performance, I can see a big future for Dempster sitting in the stands keeping company with Fergs, Rix, Howard, C Gardiner and all the other no-hopers....

I watched the whole game and I'm still not sure I've seen him play yet. I'd love his knockers to be proved wrong.

I watched him give a hospital handpass to Sam, give away some stupid free kicks, let his opponents mark inside the 50 when he was standing 5-10 metres away, and turn the ball over a few times with poorly directed kicks. A bit like Raph without the spoiling ability and the run off the halfback line.

I accept that we need to give him more time, but so far he doesn't look like any sort of improvement on our other iffy backline players like Raph, Geary, Gwilt, Fergs, etc.

Didn't look the goods today, but deserves another chance next week.

I actually didnt think he was that bad... Had 4 kicked on him, but he will take time to learn the way our backline works, and settle in...

was far from our worst.. Id retain him for next week.

Was soft, slow, unable to use his body to advantage. Slow to respond to situations and I'm not sure why he was selected. I bet fergusson wishes he used to play with sydney.

I'm happy to write him off after one match.

slowness to me seemd to be that he didn't know his teammates or which way to go-

So to summarize: Soft and slow, deserves another go.
