Essendon don't have 3 key defenders like Geelong.

So the 3 pronged attack might just work next week.

Fraser spent most of the last quarter on the bench.

Me thinks Ross may be considering a forward setup without him.

Gehrig will kick goals if he gets the delivery deep in the forward line. He doesn't apply pressure, he doesn't run up the ground to get the footy and he is less than useless at ground level. If he doesn't get lace-out delivery then his only strength (kicking goals) is non-existent and everyone calls for his head. However if the midfield is kicking it to him well then suddenly he's back in town and he's a star.

If Gehrig played for Geelong today he would have kicked 8 goals. He provides the same service every week, it is up to the midfield to utilize his talent. If our midfield is unable to provide good delivery then yes, he should be dropped, but in a true shootout he is still a very damaging player.

He takes the best or second best defender away. He still kicks 2 goals, could easily have been 4-5 if Scarlett wasn't alllowed to cheat. is a true kick for goal.

This nonsense about G being past it is rubbish - he has the potential to go on another 3-4 years ala A Lynch - not the most important player in the forward set-up, but someone requiring a good opponent. And remember, by forcing the opposition to play 3 tall defenders, we potentially reduce their speed and run out of defense (not all bif backmen are as quick as scarlett). I think Fraser's copped a lot, and I think it's unwaranted. Roo and Kozi are more damamging with G around, just as G and Roo were with A Hamill in the team.
Possibly though, CJ standing at his feet instead of Milne would help increase defense pressure in our offense

No good kicking two goals if your opponent sets up 10 for the opposition.
He is struggling big time, and hurting our set up at the same time.
He can't apply forward line pressure, can't lay a tackle and offers not much more than a statue or withces hat when they have the ball.

Was a favourite of mine, but he should of stayed retired.

alastair lynch model, dude.

so... he takes a defender out, he reduces opposition backline speed at selection, he kicks a couple, and sure, he is defensively weak (due to his lack of pace) - where's Milne to do that defensive work?

G is being blamed for a lot more than he's responsible for. Good player, great player, big heart, deserves a place

Lynch was playing when full backs were the tall guys who couldn't kick. It was rare for one to get more than 10 touches in a game. These days most full backs will kill you on the rebound if allowed to run loose.

Pretty sure you don't have to be quick if you are not being chased.

My feelings are that Lyon will try a different set up over the next two weeks and if that does not work or motivate the big G into greater efforts and returns then it may very well be time for a mutually agreed upon 2nd retirement.

& no it's not all Fraser's fault, the delivery is poor, especially the speed of delivery but that is still no excuse to put your bum in the corner and allow your direct opponent to be so influential

Its not all G's fault but he is not helping the situation, he is the tall up forward not working.

I dont care if Gehrig gets pushed out to the goal square in a wheelchair.
The oppositon needs to find three big talls to cover us.
And Gehrigs' worth can be summed up in one easy question.
As in the cats game, who in our side do you want to have the ball on the 50mt after the siren for the last kick to win the game?
Kosi, Roo, any of our onballers?
Gehrig is the best kick at the club fullstop.

This is not American Football Sunsaint, unfortunately we don't get to pick who takes that kick, the player himself is the one who has to get the ball and G can't get it at the moment, well not against the good defenders.

if we had a decent gameplan and decent delivery into our forward line there would be no problems.....

And don't forget if Gehrig wasn't out there than Scarlett would have played on Kosi or Roo.
Maybe if he hadn't been on Gehrig, he wouldn't have had more disposals then most of our mids. Maybe he wouldn't have set up just about every counter attack Geelong had.

Something important i realised, was that in both the first, second and third quarters...the only time we really kicked goals, was when Gehrig was off the ground.

He is no longer good enough for AFL. He doesn't run, he doesn't pressure, he doesn't tackle, he doesn't lead, he can't take a contested mark to save himself...he is no longer even good enough to say 'at least he took their best defender', because when he does the defender ends up being dominant.

Not sure I agree. When Steve Johnson was quizzed about Geelong's midfield on the Sunday footy show, he said that the ball sailed over his and Mooney's head many times. Would Gehrig really get more opportunity?

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency
