Eagles star Kerr to become a Saint?

Speculation about where Daniel Kerr's future lies has been rife all season but now fans have the opportunity to put their money where their mouth is.

A new market has opened about where the star Eagles onballer will be playing his football in 2009, with St Kilda the early favourite to snare his services.

St Kilda are rated a $2.75 chance by Sportingbet Australia while Collingwood are a close second at $3.50.

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett said recently it would take the "deal of a lifetime" for Kerr to be playing elsewhere in 2009 but the talk around town is that Kerr wants out, with the Eagles placed at just a $5 chance to retain their star onballer.

Carlton, who snared Kerr's good friend and former Eagles skipper Chris Judd last year, round out the top four at $8, while Essendon ($9) is next in line.

Sportingbet Australia chief executive Michael Sullivan said the Saints were favourites because they were in premiership mode and would have plenty of room in their salary cap following the departures of Fraser Gehrig and Robert Harvey.

"It has been suggested that Kerr would like to experience playing for a Victorian club and avoid the rebuilding process taking place at West Coast," Sullivan said.

"The Saints will be premiership contenders over the next few years and with Robert Harvey and Fraser Gehrig coming off the books after this season, St Kilda will have salary cap space for Kerr, should he fly out of WA.

"St Kilda would need to acquire higher draft picks and give up young talent to make this deal happen.

"Collingwood are always mentioned when a big name player is available and we consider them to be the biggest threat to St Kilda getting Kerr."

Geelong, who already possess the most potent midfield in the league and are well on their way to back-to-back premierships, are the longest odds at $41.

West Coast's cross-town rivals, Fremantle, are a $15 chance.

I heard from an ex East Freamantle and Geelong player yesterday who still has mates in AFL circles that West Coast will be happy to get $1 for Kerr as they have already put the feelers out to other AFL clubs and have been told by the clubs that he is too much trouble to spend anything on.

The article is very interesting considering I only heard this yesterday also coupled with the fact that St Kilda has had talks with Cousins.

Are the saints thinking they could pick up Cousins and Kerr cheaply. Might be a good thing. We obviously tamed Michael Gardiner so maybe our culture can help these types of players.

We cannot finish lower than 6th, which means we have no low drafdt picks already.

Kerr CANNOT come cheaply....but if he moves will not be two low draft picks.

Say one lowish plus a good player..

Or one lowish and late first round.

I don't think we have anyone to trade for a low pick that we would be happy losing.....so I cannot see it happening.


Also ignore WC's lwo finish this year...they have stockpiled a great range of young talent...and so will only want to add class to it and not flawed players.

We'd have to trade away for atleast 1 top 5 pick, so that would see Dal or another top liner go..

West Coast are already coming into $3.50 with Saints

You don't have a top 10 pick and you have very little you would be willing to trade that is actually of value to WC

Dal/Ball won't get you a top 10 in this years draft with their current form
Roo isn't going anywhere
Goddard isn't leaving and even then few clubs would be willing to part with picks 5-8 for him given the talls that are on offer this year.

Like I suggested in my post above, it would appear that Kerr has lowered his asking price because of his lifestyle away from footy.

With the Cat's peaking now...and the Hawks about to too...WC will probably be very disciplined and just want to add to the already very nice stockpile of young talent they have aquired in recent years.

They have pick 2 already....so with pick 6...and then say picks 17 and 22...they will have a very handy squad to develop into a dominant team.

Why? well, when you take the emotion out of it, Kosi really has failed to live up to expectation (outside of a handful of games). He still has the word "potential" looming over his head, and whilst he does, maybe valuable to a club like West Coast who are desperate for a key forward. If Jarryd Allen keeps developing as a key forward he can fill the breach in our forward line, and hopefully Ben McEvoy will become the ruckman that we so desperately need. It was obvious throughout the year that we just don't have enough midfielders to match it with the elite teams.

This is something I've copped some shyte over in the Kosi thread.

Everyone's talking early draft picks... but has anyone apat from Art's post considered what we could offer player-wise that WCE need? In which case, a KPP like Kosi?

We also need to decide if we're a chance for the next few years... if we are then you'd be remiss not look at all options to get a gun midfielder.

And if we do go after him, will the cost to us put us in a better position to challenge, or not?

Yes. But it has to bea reasonablly equal trade.

WC do not have to trade him as he is under contract...and more than one club would want him.

Kerr is a true elite player..not just at the eagles..but in the AFL.

Kosi is an average player with 5 good games out of 100.

So who else would you offer?

Kosi is too lumbering to play CHB these days...and CHF's by and large area lot more nimble than 5 years ago.

Kerr was good with Judd and Cousins in the team. He has been exposed now that he get the opositions best tagger. This fact plus the fact that he has some serious issues away from footy don't bode well for either himself or WC picking up the big bucks or high draft picks in a trade.

This is not the Premier League.

AFL Clubs do not buy for $$$ other players (unlike many many years ago).

Only way $$ are involved at a club level is when clubs agree to pay , or part pay out contracts.

Yes, but Kerr has a history of off field indescretions that will devalue his overall worth. And what's to say that a change of scenery may bring out the best in Kosi. I think there would be an element of risk for both clubs with this trade.
