Gerard Healy thinks we have the best defender in the comp

Sam Fisher.

I'd agree with him.

You cannot fault his game - reads the play, uses it well, great overhead, never beaten.

He's absolutely right

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

I think Sam Gilbert's been even better than Sam Fish this year personally.

I thought this would be another Zac Dawson thread.

I almost agree, but Gerard Healy still rates the Dockers. Coming from anyone elese, I'd love it. I think he's a poison chalice.

I thought he looked a little flat round 1. Bit flat and a step slower than last year, admittedly I haven't seen him live since.

Besides, I'm waiting until we play a decent midfield and attack

Our defence is quite simply amazing. The fewest points against in the AFL by a whopping 8 points per game. And we still have.....

- Hudghton
- Maguire
- Dempster
- Raph Clarke

All these players have been rated as starters within the last year. And there we were worrying about what would happen when Max retires!

Should've been All Australian the last three years. The selectors are a little slow on the uptake.

And Mike On The Couch.

I thought he skirted the issue as well as he possibly could...

Maybe "on current form" was not what was said, it was more who is the best defender "right now".

Sam's obviously had a better three weeks of football.

But in the grand scheme of things, he's right up there with the Matthew Scarlett's of this world.

Darren Glass and Ben Rutten are more your stay-at-home, traditional full-backs, Chips isn't in that mould.

Best defenders in the AFL who are in the same mould as Sam Fisher would be:

Craig Bolton
Jarrad Waite
Brian Lake
Matthew Scarlett
Nathan Bock

Would you have any of those over Fisher right now?

Not me.

If he had a left foot, he'd be up there. It's my only criticism because sometimes it causes him to a fraction less effective under pressure.

Still, minor complaint. He's learned to live with it and has adapted his game exceptionally well.

None of those I mentioned above have a great left foot.

Having a strong opposite foot is extremely rare.

Geez Luke Hodge would have to be there as well. Not only are they in the same mould they play a similar style/role in a similar game plan. The question is who ripped who off. All this talk that we are trying to copy the Hawks rolling zone defence is bullshyte. They copied us. They just got a premiership before us and so the perception is they invented it.

Scarlett is a key back, the best, as is Bolton, not quite the same.
Fisher > Bock, and both > slightly than Lake and then Waite

Fisher > Bock, and both > slightly than Lake and then Waite
They're all key-backs and they all have the ability to play on the same type of opponents.

Harley when fit usually gets the job on the number one big forward. Geelong like to free up Scarlett as much as they can the same way we like to give Fisher space as they are almost wasted when stuck with a man.

None of them are in the Rutten-Glass mould of defender which is why I grouped them all together. You could probably add Daniel Pratt and Grant Birchall to the list too but they're not on that level yet IMO although Birchall will be there eventually.

Hodge is a natural midfielder IMO which is why I didn't include him. He plays the play-maker role out of defence for the Hawks brilliantly though, no doubt. However, he doesn't generally play on the same types of forwards as those I mentioned.

If I were to group Hodge, I'd group him with Gilbee, Goddard, Peter Burgoyne, Mackie, Drummond... the true quarterback type. Hodge is just a hell of a lot tougher than any of them. :D

I love Fisher but he hasn't been that great this year... he's been good but definately not the best defender he didn't look right at times last week but still played a good game.... Gilbert probably has been the better...

Zac didn't make too many boo boos! (Neither did the rest rest to tell the truth). Zac is a 250 game champ in the making! How about that for a big statement? Whoever picked him is a genius!
